djdannydiglerParticipantHey guys… Im tring to extract the acapella by Kid Cudi – Pursuit of Happiness I have the original and intrumental.. I tried to invert the intrum.. and mix it with the original and had no lock.. I watch a vid on youtube about the d.i.y method and nada.. and idea what I might be doing wrong? Im using sound forge to invert the audio and mix both channels together… any help or ideas would be great…. thanks!

ChunkyEatsMyDinnerParticipantWhat results are you getting?

djdannydiglerParticipantnada… I had them sync perfectly and inverted the audio.. and still no luck
Im not sure what im doing wrong.. I tried this method befor and it worked… I dont get why it wont block out the backround beats??? and ideas?
thanks, danny.

ChunkyEatsMyDinnerParticipantI not great at this but found using CD quality tracks gave the best results.
If you using 2 MP3’s of different bitrates im gonna guess results will be very limited.AdSense 336x280July 26, 2010 at 4:41 pm #681385
CoreyMatthewsParticipantI know this post is kind of old, but I’m experiencing the issue as well. I believe it’s because theres no actual instrumental version anywhere on the internet. So factors like bitrate etc. play a huge role. But if you have it figured out by now let me know, I’d love to hear it!

mixer04Participantif any part of the track was recorded analog and shifted in recording the instrumental or the original. That could be a factor. Mastering is definitely a factor. Some tracks are just punched up so much from their instrumentals. I’ve had two of these happen. You can hear surrounding instruments and vocals because the original track sounded too flat. and sometimes they just don’t match… Case in point – Toni Braxton’s Just Be A Man About It. Still one of the greatest songs she’s ever done! I wanted to make a house mix after extracting the acapella. Unfortunately, the original track is about .4 bpm off of the instrumental. so short of have some type of constantly moving, inverted track that will move at exactly the right speed to create a "recordable" acapella extraction, the job will be damn near impossible.

Synthetik FMParticipantBest thing you can do:
Beatmap both tracks in ACID. This should force both tracks into the same tempo and pitch. Make sure the instrumental has been inverted. You may have to play with the volume of one of the tracks, but you should get good results.
Also: Make sure you zoom in as far as you can, and you have to make sure the waveforms match up EXACTLY opposite each other. A bit too far either way and you won’t get the frequency cancellation. In ACID, I like to play with the start offset, to get the waveforms to line up. Ideally, you want something like this:
/\ /\
/ \/ \ Waveform 1\ /\ / Waveform 2 (inverted instrumental)
\/ \/The waveforms will be mirror images of each other. And they have to line up as exactly opposite each other as you can get!

HifiBanjoStringsParticipantI shouldn’t worry – there’s loads of tracks where the instrumental is not exactly the same as the original. In that case, no matter what you do, you’ll never get a good result. The tracks may differ in terms of bpm or volume or they’re just completely different (i.e. Massive Attack – Unfinished Sympathy)

djshadesukParticipantI’m starting to think that many instrumentals are purposefully being minutely altered, to actively prevent the phase cancellation method of vocal extraction, because some artists are notoriously defensive of their vocals.
As a case in point I gave a radio DJ friend (of a large commercial station) a copy of the Cosmic Dawn remix-cum-mash of "UD Project – Summer Jam" and "Akon – Right Now". My friend got to interview Akon himself and decided that, at the end of the (fortunately off-air) interview, he would play the track to Akon to see what he thought of it. By all accounts Akon went completely ballistic and kept demanding to know where he had got it from! Even thoughthe track was, and still is, plastered all over the internet my friend didn’t rat me out!

acheadKeymasterYes, just like it´s posted already:
1. You need two EXACT versions in the same quality, volume, pitch
2. than invert the intrumental phase
3. zoom in
and place the spikes and opposite valleys
4. try another software…. like AdobeAudition or something else
5. if everything fails, try to extract the instrumental from the original version, that´s not the easiest way, but it works, too

djtopcatParticipantWhatever you do, NEVER use a warp algorithm like Ableton. That will only distort, chop the original waveform and will not work at all.
I still have yet to find one successful phase inversion that was made from vinyl (analog) source material. I tried doing it with an exact USB recorded wav
from AMG’s "bitch betta have my money" 12" single. I beatmapped both instr and vocal in Sony Acid Pro 6 and lined them up exactly at the highest zoom in setting,
and only got minimal cancellation. Still lots of bleed through frequencies. I think the knockout plug in is the best bet if you can get them lined up perfectly,
but there still will be background noise and results may differ. So far the only successful phase inversion pellas I’ve heard were made from wave files extracted from cd singles, and the source material was digital, not analog (tape reels etc)
On another note, even if you do get your hands on super rare cd singles with apparent matching instr and vocal versions say pre 1999 there’s a good chance it’s still
analog sourced, some even copies of the vinyl masters, so you’re screwed.AdSense 336x280April 2, 2011 at 5:09 pm #686527

phuturesoulParticipantYou need to be quite presise or the tracks need to be exact. I never think they sound all that good though.

is there some one, that can make a studio or just acapella of this song for me?

ralle474ParticipantSo people here talk about using an instrumental and inverting it and then mix it with the vocal version, but my question is what do I do when there isn’t an instrumental or the instrumental isn’t the same, for example Antidote (Swedish House Mafia, Knife Party) great song and I want an acapella of it. But I haven’t found it anywhere and the most important thing is that the instrumental isn’t the same as the vocal version, therefore I’m not able to use this method. And since the vocal is in a break down I’m not able to pick parts from the song and put it there… Someone… HELP!!!
