ChunkyEatsMyDinnerParticipantU can find ‘stripped down’ versions of windows on the net, sometimes called ‘gamers edition’ i believe.
I dont know much about it but it might be an option?AdSense 336x280November 18, 2010 at 5:51 am #683615

Eagle009ParticipantHere’s a tip that will save a ton of resources (even after a total re-install). Here is how you really get the speed up.
Hit Ctrl + Alt + Del, and select Task Manager. If you’re running XP, Task Manager will open right off the bat. Find out which processes are running, and start ending them one by one to find out which one’s are critical to your laptop (like my touch pointer’s program is apoint.exe… so I leave that running). DO NOT end these: svchost.exe, alg.exe, ctfmon.exe, csrss.exe, winlogon.exe, lsass.exe, services.exe
jusched.exe is Java, so you can end this if you want. If you’re not going to use the internet while you are DJ’ing, then I would end it. There’s a windowmgmt or something like that for Win7 and Vista, and if you end it you’ll get a quick blank screen, and the program will just restart so it’s not that big of a deal if you accidentally kill it. The list I just gave is for XP, so just trial and error your way through Win7. The worst that can happen is that you have to restart the computer. You can’t damage Windows ending a system critical process so don’t be afraid, or freak out if you do.
So as you figure out which one’s to keep (like those in my list and important to your system… like your pointer), make a list and write them down one by one. Keep your eye on the lower right of the task bar, and see which icons disappear as you end the processes. If you have anything open you’re not going to be using while DJ’ing (like antivirus… are you really going to be downloading files while you’re DJ’ing… if so, ignore wtf I just said) then turn it off. Antivirus programs usually need to be turned off in its control panel. Your graphics card, and Yahoo Instant Messenger do not need to be running all the &#%*ing time.
Once you have your list completed, here’s what you’re going to do:
1. Hold the Windows Logo key (on the left between ctrl and alt) and press the R key. A little window will pop up in the lower left corner that says the word "Run" in the title.2. Type in: msconfig
3. A window will pop up, and in the title it will say "System Configuration Utility". Just beneath the title you’ll see tabs that read "General", "System.INI", "WIN.INI", etc. Click the tab that says "Startup".
4. You will see a crap load of checkboxes, so you’re in the right place. You’ll see things like: jusched, ctfmon, AdobeARM, Reader_sl, etc.
5. Start unchecking everything THAT IS NOT ON YOUR LIST. If it’s on your list…. leave it checked. Here’s a list of crap you can certainly uncheck (and you’ll probably never notice a difference… except in the speed department because you’ll be going fast as ever living crap): AdobeARM, Reader_sl, qttask, GrooveMonitor, iTunesHelper (unless you use iTunesHelper… whatever that is), and anything that says Yahoo or Google in it (seriously).
6. Once you’re done doing your thing with the howyadoin, (
), you’re going to hit the OK button directly in the middle at the bottom (hey… I’m just making it idiot-proof, I know that you know where to find the OK button
)
7. You’re going to get a pop-up that says "You must restart the computer… blah blah blah", and you’ll get 2 buttons to chose from. Choose "Restart".
8. Watch how freakin fast the computer loads Windows… remember how you used to spend at least a minute watching that little bar scroll over and over, and over, and over, dying a little more every time it completed a cycle…… "Well Not Anymore!!" Say hello to your 45 seconds (or less) loading of Windows. Then watch how fast you get to the log-in screen (or go straight to the desktop). Watch the icons as they load hella fast. Boom! But then…. all of the sudden….
9. A window pops up stating "Your system is in Diagnostic… blah blah blah", well, check that box that says "Do not remind me again" (it’s not exactly like that, but it’s to that affect). Just tell it to quit reminding you, or that you don’t want to see that pop up again, read the thing and figure it out. I’m not going to hold your hand through the whole thing… not that because I’m an @$$hole, but because I can’t remember….
.
10. You’re done. Hopefully this helped you out in a way nobody has before, and this has freed up some resources for you to kick more @$$ than you could before. If not, well… it’s useful to know when your system starts bogging down after a while because you’ve accumulated so much crap from Google Toolbar and a bunch of other stuff that’s programed to piss you off for functions you hardly ever use. Sorry… I’m not a fan of toolbars… if they help you… cool. I hope they do, because at least I know that somewhere somehow they do actually serve a purpose. Maybe someone could actually let me know that they do.
So hope this helps… I’ve wasted a good 15 mins of my time to bring you this info, and since this site has helped me with my music, I figured this would be a way for me to give back… since I can’t upload…. since I have no idea how to make an a capella. Good luck! Laterz.
*Edit: I almost forgot to mention. The program spoolsv.exe is your printing service. Without this program running, you WILL NOT be able to print. Keep this checked in the "Startup" tab of the "System Configuration Utility" if you need printing enabled. If you’re doing a gig, I doubt you will be printing anything so run Task Manager and end the program just in case. You don’t want hiccups while performing…. better safe than sorry.
