gareth186Participant[size size=150:2et6ok1n]Ok so i have just produced a song and i wish to add a small vocal slice from a movie to be the main hook.
I have been looking online for a long time trying to find out about the legal situation of this.[b:2et6ok1n]I found out that "Riverside – Sydney Samson" does exactly the same thing. here:
[url:2et6ok1n]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoO_bVskLG0[/url:2et6ok1n][/b:2et6ok1n]If i was to do a similar thing, would i have to gain legal rights for it.
I know that there is a problem with using audio from a song. And there are issues with how famous a hook or phrase is.
But what if it just a completely random line from something that nobody will even remember, and if i could destort the voice so it doesnt sound like them?Is this legal? or what would be the process i would have to use to legalise it.
[/size:2et6ok1n]
Thanks.

ChunkyEatsMyDinnerParticipantI guess the best option would be to re-record the line if ur happy to play around with the sound anyway.
From the little knowledge ive picked up movie sampling is a nightmare.
The amount of money movie companies look to make they usually are not going to be interested in taking any time
to negotiate a deal for a song to be made.
If u use the sample anyway and the song goes big (all the DJs and underground radios) are playing it they will likely turn round
and demand huge if not all profits made from the track. (and they have lawyers with big ass sticks!)This is probably the worse case scenario, but it has happened before.

Jonny BuzzParticipantI always thought that was from one of 2 pacs records, didnt realise it from his movie.
But Chunky’s quite right on this.
You could change the voice with FX and make it sound totally different true with any sample in general and get away with it that way.
But just mess about sample all you want, end of day only if you hit it big time is where you might come into problems.

junglist123ParticipantJust use it, unless your gonna go commercial or you think the tune is gonna blow up that massive, you may as well just use it. movie samples + tv samples are not in the same league as music samples, you are not competing for the same market. ive also heard (this was from speaking to prs or mcrs?) that as long as you can prove you tried to get permission to use the samples, movie/tv stuff is a very grey area, and uless they think they are gonna get big money out of you they wont even pursue it, This was just a kind person who didnt mind giving me some info on how it works, it wasnt the "official" prs adviice or anything, but im guessing they knew there stuff, just think; most of the underground tracks around (and the successful ones)use samples like the matrix, friday, the usual suspects and I suspect most of these did not get official rights, a few may of, just depends how big you think your track will go.
