Beat Detection Engine™

Digital Performer’s new Beat Detection Engine™ and tempo analysis features give you unprecedented rhythmic and tempo control over your audio, further blurring the line between audio and MIDI data in the most cohesive audio sequencing environment ever devised.

Employing sophisticated transient detection technology, the Beat Detection Engine analyzes audio loops and audio files that contain rhythmic music to determine where the beats are in the music. Importing Apple Loops, REX files, ACID WAV’s and other audio material is just the beginning: as soon as you import them, or record audio tracks, the Beat Detection Engine goes to work. Audio immediately conforms to the tempo of your project and you can then begin applying a wide array of beat- and tempo- related features, such as:

Align any audio to the tempo of your project
Even if the loop you just imported doesn’t have embedded tempo information, Digital Performer can immediately snap it to the tempo of your project. But what about lengthy audio files? How do you get them to match your project’s tempo? With the Beat Detection Engine, it’s easy. Just drag and drop them into a track in your project, and Digital Performer takes care of the rest, even conforming the audio to your project’s tempo automatically, if you wish. The convenient Set Sync Point At First Beat command lets you quickly align the first beat (or any beat you wish to use as a reference) to your sequence time ruler.

Quantize beats within soundbites
Tighten up the timing of audio tracks with Digital Performer’s Quantize command, applying just the right amount of strength, offset, randomization or even shuffle/swing. Apply grooves to audio and extract them from audio
You’ve been able to create and apply rhythmic feel – grooves – to MIDI data for years in Digital Performer. Now you can do the same for MIDI and audio. Apply grooves to MIDI and audio tracks in one operation, including both timing and “velocity” (the relative strength) of each beat. Extract a groove from audio and apply it to MIDI tracks, or vice versa. If your drummer lays it down, just extract his/her feel and apply it to your programmed MIDI tracks in seconds for the tightest, most natural sounding composite rhythm tracks ever.

Snap your edits to beats
Edit grids are commonplace. But imagine making edits to a beat grid that truly match the beats of your audio, perfectly aligned with the placement and feel of each beat. Even something as simple selecting a two-bar loop can be a painstaking process when all you have is an edit grid. But in Digital Performer, you can create loops with perfectly aligned end points by just sweeping across the peaks in the waveform with beat snapping enabled. For beat-based editing, Digital Performer’s beat grid snapping can save you hours.

Split audio on the beats
For extreme tempo changes and other drastic rhythmic and tempo operations, it’s best to split loops and drum tracks into individual beats to minimize extreme time-stretching artifacts. Digital Performer lets you do this directly in your audio tracks: there’s no need to work in a separate window. Just select one or more tracks and apply the Create Soundbites from Beats command. You can even choose a guide track to apply the same splits across all selected tracks for consistent editing. Since Digital Performer’s editing environment is sample-accurate, phase coherence is maintained at each split point across all tracks – a critical factor when editing drum tracks recorded simultaneously from different mic positions, for example.

Sample-accurate precision
When it comes to rhythmic feel, timing is absolutely everything. If the beats are sloppy, timing and feel go right out the window. Thanks to Digital Performer’s internal sample-accurate precision (it’s actually much greater than sample-accurate), the Beat Detection Engine is capable of being accurate down to the sample in finding the true initial transient for each beat, especially with musical material for which this technology has been specifically designed (recordings of individual instruments playing rhythmic music).

Beat editing
Digital Performer lets you edit both the location and velocity (relative strength) of each beat. It’s like having the basic features of Recycle™ built right in to Digital Performer. Tweak the beats for the exact feel you’re aiming for. Then apply all beat- and tempo-related features based on your fine-tuned adjustments.

Plug-in latency compensation
Running under MAS and DAE, Digital Performer’s plug-in latency compensation is sample-accurate — for any MAS, Audio Unit, TDM or RTAS plug-in (including virtual instruments).

MasterWorks EQ
Inspired by legendary British large console EQs, the MasterWorks EQ gives you the look, feel and sound of the most sought-after classic equalizers.

Five bands of EQ filtering are provided, each with four EQ types that provide current popular EQ styles and vintage analog EQ styles alike. Two mid bands (LMF and HMF) include shelf filtering. Two additional bands of variable slope low pass and high pass filtering are provided.

Consolidated Window

Many of Digital Performer’s powerful features are accessed in separate windows, such as the Track List, Sequence Editor, Mixing Board and Waveform Editor. Digital Performer 4.52’s new Consolidated Window is designed for users who would prefer to work in one window, with access to each feature via tabs across the top of the window.

Features that opened as separate windows in previous versions of Digital Performer, such as the Soundbites window and Sequence Editor, can now appear as a section of the Consolidated Window, either in the center (main body) or in the left- or right-hand sidebars.

You can customize the sections of the window to suit your exact needs, adding as many sections as you wish and resizing them as desired. And you can create and save as many customized Consolidated Window layouts as you like via Digital Performer’s Window Sets feature. Factory presets are provided for tracking, editing, mixing and other portions of your workflow.

Dynamic CPU Management
When you first begin to use DP 4.52 (operating natively under DP’s MAS engine), you will likely notice the CPU meter in the Performance Monitor displaying a significantly lower reading than it did in previous versions, indicating that you have more processing power at your disposal for real-time effects and virtual instruments.

This enhanced processing performance is due to a new feature called Dynamic CPU Management, which has been implemented in all of the effects plug-ins included with DP, such as the MasterWorks EQ, MasterWorks Limiter, Plate reverb, eVerb, Delay, Sonic Modulator, etc. These plug-ins now automatically disable their processing when they would otherwise be idle (i.e. generating silence). Therefore, a plug-in imposes no demands on your host computer until it receives an audio signal from the audio track on which it is instantiated. When audio is received, the plug-in processes the audio and continues to do so until the signal dies away, fully accounting for reverb tails, delay taps, and other similar residual audio signals created by the plug-in itself. Since there are often long stretches of silence in each track during a typical DP project, the amount of CPU savings that you experience can be significant. Actual results will vary and depend greatly on the plug-ins used, the placement of audio material in each track, and other circumstantial factors.
Dynamic CPU Management is supported in all of the effects plug-ins that ship with DP 4.52. DP also provides Dynamic CPU Management for all third-party AU effects plug-ins.

Productivity Enhancements

Smooth Audio Edits
Audio edits that you make often produce gaps between soundbites. This is especially true when editing dialog, or splitting soundbites into small slices using Digital Performer’s new beat editing features. These gaps of silence can be audible and usually sound unnatural. The new Smooth Audio Edits feature can save hours of tedious editing by automatically filling gaps with “room tone” to mask them, complete with automated crossfades for 100% seamless transitions. You can create your own room tone or have Digital Performer find room tone for you in the original audio files so that it exactly matches the natural silences in the audio.

QuickScribe Film Cues View
Digital Performer is used world-wide by film composers because of its unparalleled advanced features for scoring to picture. Version 4.52 introduces a new QuickScribe notation view that shows film cues in a manner familiar to film composers, allowing them to see cue points (markers) with respect to beats on a time line above each staff system, complete with SMPTE time code locations, beat locations and nearest beat or half-beat. Meter changes, key changes and tempo changes can be inserted directly on the staff with convenient pop-up menus. Numerous other enhancements have also been made to the QuickScribe Editor.

QuickTime movie DV playback offset
Digital Performer 4.52 can now compensate for the slight playback offset inherent in DV video playback devices. You can now achieve frame-accurate lock-up to picture with QuickTime movies both stopped and during playback.

Bounce / Export to MP3 and other formats
Digital Performer 4.52’s Bounce to Disk and Export Audio features can now output directly to a variety of interleaved stereo file formats provided by Mac OS X. In addition, Version 4.52 can now bounce and export directly to MP3’s – a huge time saver. A wide variety of MP3 export options are provided, including constant bit rate and variable bit rate encoding.

Saving Bounce Settings

DP 4.52 allows you to save your bounce-to-disk settings by name so that you can quickly “re-bounce” any material after making further changes to the source tracks. You can re-bounce by either pressing a user-assignable keystroke or choosing the bounce operation by name from the Bounce Settings sub-menu.

Multi Bounce

The Multi Bounce command lets you run multiple saved bounce settings in one operation. You can even run bounce settings from multiple DP projects. For example, you might have 7 or 8 different multi-track DP projects from which you are bouncing stereo mixes for an album. After making minor tweaks and adjustments during the final stages of mixing, you could conveniently re-bounce all 7 or 8 tracks in one operation. At the end of the multi bounce session, a summary window provides detailed information regarding each bounce.

Plug-in automation
Plug-ins with many automation parameters are handled faster in previous versions, and the management of automation parameters has been optimized throughout the program. Only parameters that are actually being automated are displayed in lists and menus. Automation snapshots provide new options: they can either include all parameters (there is a new menu item for this) or only those currently being automated (i.e. parameters that exist in a track or that are enabled for automation). The latter is the default option.
Hardware-accelerated plug-insHardware-accelerated AU plug-ins load only for the currently play-enabled sequence. This is especially important for TC PowerCore and Universal Audio UAD-1 users. In DP 4.52, these plug-ins would take up precious DSP resources, even when they were instantiated in sequences not currently enabled for playback. With DP 4.52, only the plug-ins in the currently play-enabled sequence will load.
Preferences and Settings windowAll of the preferences and general settings in Digital Performer, old and new, are now gathered in one consolidated Preferences and Settings window for quick and convenient reference.

More voices and busses
Digital Performer 4.52 supports up to 99 mono voices, 99 stereo voices and 99 stereo busses. These new maximums provide 297 audio voices (for automatic voice allocation) and 198 bus channels.

Mono, stereo and n-channel busses
Digital Performer 4.52’s bussing architecture has been enhanced. Busses can now be configured as mono, stereo or n-channel (surround) busses. The Mixing Board provides the appropriate style panner, depending on the channel format you choose. Surround panners are provided for n-channel busses. In addition, multi-channel signals can be summed to a mono send. Each send also now has a pre/post fader switch.

More sends
Digital Performer 4.52 can display up to 20 sends per track in the Mixing Board. Choose as many sends as your needs require.
Apple Loop importDrag and drop Apple Loops directly into Digital Performer audio tracks, where they immediately and automatically conform to the tempo of your music.

Better previewing of effects plug-in region operations
When you apply a plug-in as a region operation from the Audio menu Plug-ins sub-menu, previewing has been enhanced. When you click the Preview button, the currently selected region loops continuously until you click the Stop button (or click anywhere outside the effect window). Parameter adjustments can be heard in real time as you change them. A preroll and postroll amount can be added to the beginning and end of the currently selected region for previewing purposes. These previewing enhancements have also been made for Audio Units being applied as region operations.

Plug-in preset enhancements
User plug-in presets are grouped into a new User Presets sub-menu. In addition, many factory presets have been organized into convenient, categorized sub-folders.
Bypass automation for AU plug-insDP 4.52 supports bypass automation for Audio Unit plug-ins.

Scroll wheel support
If your mouse has a scroll wheel on it, you can now use it with Digital Performer.

Marker Locate Numbers
DP’s Markers window displays a new column that allows you to control the locate number assigned to each marker. You can then quickly locate to that marker by using the customizable Go To Marker keystroke and then typing in the desired locate number. In previous versions of DP, locate numbers were automatically assigned to markers (via their order in the marker list), forcing you to relearn the locate points when adding a new marker somewhere in the middle of a project’s timeline. Now, you have complete control over locate numbers, and you can preserve numbers you’ve memorized during the course of a project.

Many other productivity enhancements
Digital Performer 4.52 introduces many other enhancements that you’ll use every day. For example, when bussing a track to an aux track, you can now assign the track’s output to a bus and create the new aux track, all in one operation. Find tempo

To score a film effectively, you need to hit cue points accurately. Digital Performer’s Find Tempo feature lets you find the right tempo in seconds. Set up your master list or import a cue sheet. Choose the type of hit for various markers and assign weight according to the importance of the hit. Then let Digital Performer search your markers and suggest a tempo that hits critical cue points. If you write music to picture, whether its film, video, animation, jingles or Quicktime, Digital Performer’s Find Tempo feature will be a huge time saver for you.

Insert measures
Have you ever wanted to add more time to the beginning of the sequence without moving any existing material? Insert Measures is a feature that film composers will really appreciate. Let’s say you have a SMPTE sync point that starts a piece of music you have composed. This music is perfect, but the director wants to add some lead-in music to build some tension. Simply drop in as much space as you need and Insert Measures preserves all times including SMPTE hit points following the insertion point.

Track grouping
Digital Performer’s track grouping feature allows you to create an unlimited number of track groups, and tracks that can be linked for mixing, editing, both or for a customized set of operations that you specify. Tracks can be a member of more than one group. Groups can also be “nested” within each other. Track grouping allows you to apply operations to the tracks in the group as a single unit. For example, for a mix group, moving the volume fader for one track in the group moves the faders in all tracks in the group.

FireWire QuickTime video playback
The Movie window has the ability to output a DV-formatted QuickTime movie via FireWire. You can then use a standard DV camera or FireWire conversion box to convert the FireWire video into composite video to view it as full screen video on a standard TV or video monitor—even on iMacs or laptops.
