leeroyparnellParticipantI found out a lil trick to make using a somewhat-shady-quality instrumental with the knockout vst work a LOT better…
once you’ve got the two files synched and channeled into the same file, run both channels through a compressor at the same setting… also, if you have the Waves UltraMaximizer, I’ve found using it sometimes works really nice… Any preprocessing you can do before actually running the file through knockout seems to help tremenously… I’ve had a lot of success in the past day or two doing this, along with separately EQ’ing the channels until the volumes and levels are almost identical…
Let me know if this helps you any, and if anyone has any more tips for knockout, let’s hear them!
and thanks to ytknows for this info.

AcidLoverParticipantThanks for the tip, I’ll check this out when I get home.
I’ve been quite impressed with knOckout, it’s certainly given me the best results so far!AdSense 336x280May 9, 2005 at 9:26 am #571555
boinkParticipantwhat is this knockout plugin i keep reading about? what program is it for?

johndoe99Participanti’m curious too — is knockout just for windows?
and i know that this is an elementary question, but: i bought some second-rate house cd single at a thrift store yesterday because it had both an original song with vocals and an exact instrumental of that same song…
…i assumed that it would be as easy as inversing the instrumental and matching it up precisely with the original version…
…but it doesn’t work really at all. even when i line the two up down to the level of a single sample (i.e. one 44100th of a second), it just sounds passably good for about 3 seconds before going to hell quickly.
why might this be? i presume that the knockout vst would do well for this? (is there anything similar for macs?) killing everything but the mid and high mid in the EQ as well (for both tracks)?
any tips would be greatly appreciated.

TiMGParticipanthey.. good tip
yes. try running plugins on your channels – prekn0ckout
I sometimes use ‘dominion’ which is a very good (and FREE!) plugin.. if u use it to boost the 1st 5-8ms of your instrumental track you can help reduce drums further. boosting the bass on the instru can help too

leeroyparnellParticipantyeah, I’ve been dependent on Waves Bundle
New tip!
If you have a full (stereo) instrumental and full regular version of the song for use in knockout… try processing both versions using the MS-Stereo method and THEN aligning those two and running them thru knockout… I’ve been getting beautiful results!AdSense 336x280May 14, 2005 at 5:16 pm #571828

leeroyparnellParticipantit can be used in programs that support vst plugins
and just search the acapellas for ‘parnell’ and you’ll find (some) of my DIY’s… there are more, but some of them i didn’t name like that before i uploaded

SPiNTECHParticipantI think knOckout is one of the best acapella extractor I’ve tried so far, one tip to make sure both regular and instrumental versions are tightly sync’d is to run ACiD Pro’s beatmapper on both sources and run them parallel to see if it’s tight! – then save the individual files again to run over in Sound Forge’s VST plugin for knOckout.dll – The result will be very clean with minimal overlays. Save the mono signal file and run it thru a 3D stereo enhancer to get that live feel prior to layering it over the remix.

skymallParticipanti have found that when i render/bounce the track it comes out a worse quality than when i was listening to it so i started to just record line-out to another computer in real time. so yeah there’s my tip.

lol, I think it’s about time we took the “I” word out of our BAnned Word lists 😉
Vinney – I’m no expert but I’m sure they’re talking about having the original version of the track AND the instrumental. I think this is said throughout most of the posts within the DIY section though tbh.
