Don’t know if anyone’s mentioned this yet, but on oldies (read: pre-high compression, high gloss studio stuff from the 80’s and thereafter) sometimes the tracked is panned very hard. Just split your file, identify which channel is vocal heavy or vocal exclusive, delete the other and convert the remaining channel to mono. Clean up whatever bleed you might have with equalizing and restoration techniques. This affords some decent acapellas, though often you get one other instument; for instance a perc-acapella or an acapella with bass etc….
