Here’s a method I have found for 80’s acapellas, and I may have mentioned this before:
The extended remix method!
Find an extended remix of an 80’s song you want acapellas for. Study the structure of the remix, see if there are any instrumental bits corresponding to the verses or choruses that you can align alongside these verses and choruses
What you do: Open ACID (how I do it) … beatmap the song
Do splits where all the vocals and choruses and vocal bits are
Find sections in the mix where instrumental parts match the vocal bits, split them from the song, copy and paste to where the vocal bits should go
And there you go, a DIY instrumental track which can then be used for acapella purposes.
A great song that this worked on was Howard Jones Things can Only Get better. I have the acapella for this in the directory, and I made this entirely using the extended 12" mix of this song. The mix had a long instrumental break where the verse and chorus instrumentation were repeated, these were the keys to isolating the vocals.
