I grew up in Punk bands, then moved onto Indie and then Post-Rock. Through that I got into Drum Machines and started making Industrial and Noise stuff. Then I went back and started playing some No-Wave, messed around with some silly Tom Waitsy Cabaret stuff for a while and as a side project started messing about with Hip Hop and Dance Punk.
This group right here I describe as something like "Hip Hop For White People".
I’m White, and Irish, and fairly middle class, what the hell do I know about "Tha Hood"? I never grew up with Hip Hop or Funk or Soul or any of that, so it’d be pretty inappropriate for me to just steal some breaks and rhymes. So instead I just use stuff that I actually grew up with. Lots of Punk, Dance, Industrial, Goth, Indie, Twee, Classical etc. I still use all the same techniques as Hip Hop, samplers, scratching, chopping, looping it just turns out COMPLETELY different!
Recently I’ve started running my samplers through my guitar rig, just to see what would happen. I’ve always been fascinated with Dub, and wanted to see how I could get a stranger, more organic sound out of my set up. it sounds pretty cool, but I’m still not gig ready with it, mostly just fun vocal delays, some reverb on the odd snares, distorting the fuck out of a beat, little bit of wah wah and phasers on basslines etc. It’s weird, but fun as hell. I’ve actually managed to get a pretty decent synthesis of something like a Kaoss Pad, just not as extreme and doesn’t mean I lose a hand whilst triggering samples.
