AdamTraceParticipantHelp ME! My PC keeps powering down whilst i’m using it.
I know nothing about PC’s except how to use things like ACID/Ableton etc. and various P2P programs, but nothing at all about funny languages that you all speak or special names for hard ware…
Just to clarify, I’m a moron!
Oh, and to clarify my problem, The PC generally shuts down while i’m playing a song or burning a CD.
If there is any more info required, please tell me what you need to know and where to look for it…… Remember, MORON!:P
Many Thanks in Advance

SeanzaParticipantOK Adam, the main reason a PC shuts down is due to over-heating. It does seem like a new PSU* is needed for yours. Obviously your PC is under some sort of stress. Be it being on for too long, doing too much at once or just being old.
If you’re still within your warranty period, the manufacturers of your PC should replace that for you no problem. Give them a call to find out if you are still in warranty if you’re unsure. They will just ask for a few details of you & the PC, log a call then either get an engineer out to fix it or they will ask if you know anyone who can fit it for you.
Hope that helps.
Peace

baboooParticipantI agree with Prequel. This could be due overheating or an overload of your PSU.
Just for the record:
When did this issue start to happen? Did you upgrade some devices, like extra harddisc or new videocard? Did you install some software before it started?
Does it shut down regularly (you can see "windows is shutting down" screen), does it reboot, or complete fast power-off (like you unplugged the powercable)
Does it also happen if you turn the computer off, wait 10-20 minutes until everything is cold, and then start your computer and immediatly play some music? If that happens i don’t think it is due overheating.
Does it also happen when you start a processor/power-intensive programm like a game?
How old is your computer? What brand or is it a self built one?

FunkLogikParticipantMy next computer will be a MAC. And that is coming from somebody who’s been a "Windows Warrior" since I’ve been using computers.
After working at Guitar Center & Sam Ash Music for the last two years, and getting to use the latest and greatest stuff from Apple, it’s not even CLOSE when it comes to STABILITY when doing anything video or music related.

mattbibbyParticipantYeh i mean i dont think this is the best time to have an OS argument otherwise if you continue i’ll bring up my custom Linux OS made from Gentoo and just own you all…
Anyway..
I used to have those sort of problems with my old Athlon box… It was due to CPU cooling..
Maybe check the BIOS for CPU & System Temperatures.. and concemplate changing the CPU Fan/Heatsink.

wigglyi73ParticipantTry opening your computer and dusting it out, that might solve your overheating problems without you having to buy a new cooler or PSU. A 3.99 can of air will do it
