Reggie_p75ParticipantEvening all, a new mash I started Friday n sort of mastered today:-
Katy Perry – Hot n Cold (Instrumental) (a crappy 128k MP3
)
Ladyhawke – Back of the van (Acapella) (sliced n diced)I know Katy Perry has been done to death acapella-wise but recently I’d been listening to a lot of Ladyhawke’s album n figured I’d try mash the ‘Back of the van’ acapella with something.. So checking the tempo n hunting thru my instrumentals I came to the Hot n Cold instrumental (sadly a lo-fi version).
The instrumental was untampered and the acapella sliced n diced to fit the instrumental.
Did a bit of EQ, compression n jiggery pokery (on a pair of bass heavy Sony headphones) so maybe the vocals EQ is high but I still wanted them to cut thru the mix.
Thanks in advance to anyone who downloads n listens. All comments.. good, bad n ugly are appreciated.
Cheers
Rob

random1234567890ParticipantLove the idea of it. Katy Perry has been a bit done to death, but "Hot N Cold" is a fantastic pop song, so I commend you for not being too afraid to use it

"Back of the Van" is probably my least favourite Ladyhawke single, so I think this is quite an improvement, lol.
The verses sound… a little out of tune with the backing. I’m not sure that that could be remedied by changing the pictch of them, because it might just be that the melody doesn’t work with the backing.
The chorus sounds a little off pitch-wise but I love the sound so I don’t really care!

The chorus-bridge-finalchorus bit is fantastic! Really love it

Great mash-up

Random1234567890 thanks for the more indepth comments.
The whole idea behind the mashup was when I heard the Hot n Cold instrumental chorus n thought ‘I can do a number with this one!’ I had listened to the Ting Tings, Avril lavigne and more ever so slightly pop-rock chick stuff but definately NO MILEY CYRUS (but I think my curiosity is gonna get the better of me now).
I understand where ur coming from about the verses being a bit dis-jointed pitchwise but I think that’s because the bassline starts in a nice key fitting the vocals, then shifts down, up, down, up and ideally it woulda worked with a slower bassline (something I’m gonna try – cut n pasting the bassline)… Before all this I had tryed subtle key changes to the vocals but more than a few semi-tones n it sounds crap.
I thought the chorus worked better in general and the bridge worked out sweet, which I hadn’t even considered and was quite pleased when it fitted

The jury is still out on whether I mixed the vocals too high with some nice cutting EQ so they’d stand out, I did about 4 final mixes n put this one out.. might try a mix with the vocals lower.
I might re-post it after playing with the bassline, I like to leave things for a few days n listen with ‘fresh ears’ then re-package, re-edit, re-mash..
Thanks for the comments guys

random1234567890ParticipantSo I listened to it again and I was thinking:
The bass-line for Hot N Cold is: G D E C.
The first note for Back of the Van is E. So if you take the verse up a third, it should sound pretty good because the highest note of the verse (B) will land on the C of the bass line to make a CMaj7 chord.
The only problem would be that then it would fall down a third when it came to the chorus, which might sound a bit odd…
Hmm… it’s an interesting problem.
Anyway, sorry; just thinking out aloud. Still love the bridge and the chorus

[/quote:k3yx8r2b]Well I left it a few days and decided to go back to the Katy Perry/Ladyhawke mashup..
I found a better quality Katy Perry instrumental for starters…
I tried a few different things from changing the pitch and layering the vocals (which didnt really work) to trying to re-construct the bassline to fit n this is where I made a discovery.
The bassline sounds ‘out’ because it changes before the beat
so with some careful deconstruction, I fixed it so the bassline is nice n tight and changes on the beat. I think it sounds a lot better for it..Thanks again for the comments and to anyone else who fancies downloading the newer version of my Katy Perry/Ladyhawke mash.
Cheers
