ddoubleParticipantwhat tricks have you learnt to make your snares snap/crack?
the only one ive learnt recent is to double up the first few waves of the sound (ie copy the 1st 0.02 seconds of it and paste the copied section back at the start)
is there any tricks u hip hop guys use?
do u double up with different snares to get a new sound?

playmakerParticipantIf you have a sample that misses a bit of the snap try out Waves TransX Wide or Voxengo Transmodder. These can boost (or cut out) the transients in any sound!
I would also suggest eq:ing and compression,
that goes for all kind of music, not just hip-hop.And for some great reference on EQ check this URL.

The stuff your saying about doubling is good, maybe try pan them a bit aswell, just experiment!
Hope this can help you get THE snare sound you want!

johnferrarisParticipantLayer snares. Find one thats got a nice snap to it, then layer it with a more thuddy snare. I find some *slight* compression (if any) followed by some tube distortion also helps to give them more bite

acapellaKeymastersorry but I couldn’t resist.
q: how do you make your snares snap?
a: take a sledge-hammer to ’em.

jforceParticipanti take two or three different snares that hit real well together and eq ’em to the taste of the song

GindiarParticipantI have become a leery of stacking too many sounds. It can get muddy. It’s kind of like EQing a mix with each frequency on max. I prefer to use simple tones that cut through the mix. To get a cool snare I do one of two methods.
One is to use one nice snare sound with some good hi and low frequencies. Shorten the decay and make it loud.
The other way is to stack no more than two good snare sounds; the first is a snappy tinny snare pitched higher and a short decay. The second sound is thicker with a good low boom and a tad bit longer decay but not too long.
The other advice I can give is to create your snare while listening to it in the mix, everything sounds good while solo.

DJ ValParticipantjohnferraris I just listened to your Breathe Again and Silence. These tunes are banging. Where did you get the synth sounds and what programme did you use. Keep them tunes coming.

I’m the lucky owner of a Virus C synth, which is what I used for the leads and bass
The other sounds were created using the V-Station, Fruity 3xOsc, Juno x2 and a few others. I used the Waves 5 Platinum for the staple fx, along with 2 hardware reverbs and a few miscellanious fx. The vocals for Breathe Again recorded round a mates house (basiclly re-wrote the J-Lo ‘I’m Real’ lyrics
). Sequencing-wise, both tunes were sketched out in FL Studio, although Breathe Again was later imported into Logic 5 and Silence into Cubase SX. It is worth noting though that Breathe Again was made 100% in software, and both tunes could have soley been made in FL Studio (with some 3rd party plugins). I only import them into the more heavy-weight sequencers purley because i don’t like FL’s ‘Play List’
(plus its got a depressing colour scheme

johnferrarisParticipant[quote quote="bysbox1":3d2wih0r]UAD-1 LA2A. Hands down. I found out that both Danny Tenaglia and Junior Vasqez use the actual hardware for snares.
With a little EQ and a LA2A, you get a killer sounding snare.
The cards sound just like the hardware and a lot of big studios prefer them because you can have the settings from the plug-ins. The real thing does not have programmable presets (and you will pay almost $2000 for the hardware)![/quote:3d2wih0r]
You don’t need fancy hardware or DSP cards to get beefy snares. Its down to technique, and nothing but technique. Spending £300 on a card and £150 on the LA2A plugin won’t suddenly make ur tunes sound beefy and well produced

squiffyParticipantStarting off with a decent sample is always good… but obvious. Boosting the eq in the mid range is always good especially if you put a subtle distortion and then a compressor on. Another little tip I like to tell everybody i ask (although not stictly on topic) is that when a snare is hit softly, it produces a slightly lower note, so change the pitch of your snares slightly depending on their velocity.

In SilicoParticipantshort attack, short sustain, long decay, no release – envelopes baby

tim.gosdenParticipantUse a GATE or an EXPANDER!

tim.gosdenParticipantLol ok then! Use a GATE and an EXPANDER
AdSense 336x280July 25, 2005 at 11:31 am #575628
ddoubleParticipantNot come across expanders before
whats the basic principle of them?
AdSense 336x280July 25, 2005 at 11:48 am #575630
tim.gosdenParticipantExpanders are basically a compressor in reverse. The take the low peaks and make then lower, and make the loud peaks louder!
If set right they will cut the end of the sound of, giving a snappy snare

ddoubleParticipantAhh ive seen the presets of my compressor mention that b4, will experiment with that 2nite
cheers!!
