AdamTraceParticipantWhat genre’s do you prefer to play?
What genre’s do you like mixing up?
Do you ever play outside your preferred genre’s?and last but not least, am i the only one who likes to have a break from my genre of choice and play a set entirely composed of something else?
for example…..
I usually play upfront/big room house/electro a la Mark Knight, Copyright, Sucker DJ’s, but i also like to drop some breaks, or some uptempo hiphop/funk a la Missy, Sean Paul etc.
I also enjoy spinning ol skool hip hop/funk on a weekly basis instead of my usual 6-7 dance gigs. I try and feature stuff like Beastie Boys, Digital Underground, Zapp & Roger etc. and make people reminisce about the tracks that represent yesteryear…….
discuss……

2GSParticipantI play mostly house and/or hip-hop, but I like to mix in stuff that’s in a similar tempo that might cross genres. This could include playing uptempo country in a disco house set, adult contemporary rock in a downtempo set, or drum n bass (half-time of course) in a hip-hop set. I group my tracks by bpm instead of traditional genres. I don’t care for purist sets of any kind.
My favorite genres to cross in are mid-to-late 90s dance pop (a la Dance Dance Revolution/Dancing Stage) and mid 90s alternative rock.
And Adamtrance, you are not alone in wanting to break free from your main genre. That’s why Armand Van Helden made Sampleslayer: Enter The Meatmarket. Variety is the spice of life, dude.

DJ ValParticipantI’m a true Funky & Tribal House babe. I do however enjoy mixing the odd bit of trance. I must say though I brefer the trance from the days of Delerium’s – Silence etc., that era.
Having said that many months ago I was tempted to experiment with laying a Hip Hop vocal on a Funky House track. As they say snooze you loose, as it’s being done quite alot lately.
I think I may try something like adding a verse or break from a calssic classical from perhaps Mozart or Vilvaldi, wierd or what ?AdSense 336x280September 20, 2006 at 9:52 pm #598837
Viktor KParticipantHave played genre crossing sets many time. Then it’s mostly House and Hip Hop. But I like to throw in some disco classics or maybe a old school hip hop track (I really prefer those to todays tracks, they are so funky!).
Playing something like Kurtis Blow – The Breaks are a lot of fun to say the least

But the most fun sets for me is when I can stick to funky/electro house.

If you are talking about remixes I have posted up two on here. It was a long time ago I did them though since im only producing house these days. Im thinking about producing a hip hop track again though to get some change and perspective.
I can upload them again and send you the links in a PM if you wanna hear it.I think this thread is about genre crossing DJing though and not producing/remixing.

JuggernautParticipanti’m a sucker for all sorts…i’ll mix between house and trance to breaks to dnb with hip-hop/rnb mixed in…and if i feel creative, old reggae and ragga tracks.
My main areas are Electro house, Breaks and Drum n bass (or atleast that’s what i play on fridays)

djastonish1047ParticipantI play a mixture of everything and anything that i can be creative with….

davefjParticipantOver the years I have DJed a lot of everything from Techno, Speed Garage and Big Beat to Rock, Indie and Metal and back again.
I don’t have a specific style that I prefer DJing as good tunes are good tunes whatever style it is and I have fun playing out.
At present I am spending alot of my DJing time mixing Indie/Alt with itself as well as with House, Breaks and Hip Hop. I also love to drop a bit of DnB into the mix as well.
This spawned my interest in the whole Mash Up/Bootleg scene and thus kick started my own Remixing and Bootleg thing (one of my remixes is in the DnB section of the board – it’s a remix of the Cure’s "Love Cats").
For examples of my tunes check the myspace link in my signiture

AdamTraceParticipantsome interesting responses! good to see that there is a wide musical appreciation across the board…
I wonder, not many of you have answered the question i was really interested in….
What do you love to play outside of your genre of choice? i’m talking about one night where you can play anything, where you’d have all the tunes supplied to you, in the environment of your choice, as long as it isn’t your regular thing.
For Me, i’d say it would have to be something like Mark Farina style stuff, aka mushroom jazz or whatever it’s called…. real downtempo stuff thats funky but not clubby….
Thoughts?

santeroParticipantI’m known as a hip hop DJ, but I play all sorts really. Obviously there are the things that dovetail obviously with hip hop, like funk and R&B, but also there’s D&B, I love broken beat, there’s plenty of house I like, and you can’t beat a good bit of pop.
One of my favourite parts of the week is the last half hour at Nottingham Revolution on a Saturday – normally most people have headed to a club by then, and I’m usually steaming, so thats when the guilty pleasures come out; this week saw Lionel Richie, Franz Ferdinand, Depeche Mode and Electronic put in appearances

AdSense 336x280November 6, 2006 at 10:24 am #602255
dekoffieParticipantDepends on what kind of gig I’m playing at ..
When I’m at home, I’ll always play trance music, and only that
When I play for myself, it’s nothing else but trance =)
And when I play out, well.. if it’s a regular party I try to put in a bit of everything, make sure I can give every member of the audience a bit of his own taste. So I go from electro house to pop music, cut out and put in some ragga etc, start back with d&b and put some old rock&roll in, .. all depending on the taste of the audience ofcourse
When I’m booked for a trance gig, yeah well, I only play trance ofcourse. Except if I have to do the entire night, then I’ll make sure to get some variety in my set (put in some house, electro and techno, but nothing else in most cases)

djzmoneyParticipantHip Hop to 80s rock or new wave is the hot thing in the clubs right now…makes white people actually dance! =P
AdSense 336x280November 6, 2006 at 10:14 pm #602529
tonloc517Participanti spin hip hop, reggae, 80s & new wave, pop remixes, a bit of trance, and even freestyle & electro. i would mix cross genres with hip hop and 80s, and to pop remixes. Back in the days I use to cross with electro, booty, and some 80s…just gotta see how the crowd is reacting and hit them with it
AdSense 336x280November 7, 2006 at 12:43 am #602577
OneParticipanti play a lil bit of everything hiphop, r&b, reggae, house, and oldskool and see what the crowd is into that night but mostly I like to play hiphop and reggae

asdf54ParticipantOlder Hip-hop, top-40, R&B songs
Yes I have to play outside my prefered genre because I do a lotta school dances.
My perfect crowd would be where I can play hiphop w/ a mix of some alternative rock & trance.
AdSense 336x280November 15, 2006 at 5:24 pm #603285
SeanzaParticipantA recebtly attempted crossing a hip-hop track with some Satriani guitar, it was pretty cool, but a guess that’s not what you’re talking about.
As mentiond in ma previous reply to this topic, a make the occasional house track but nothing is finished, that’s still the case but am also on the lookout for Rock instrumentals and acapellas to try some of that stuff too.
AdSense 336x280November 25, 2006 at 7:51 pm #604091
dj.ScrewheadParticipantI’m mainly a DnB DJ, with hiphop leanings. The DnB I like tends to be all over the place, from hiphop-influenced jump up, to really hard metal/hardcore/industrial influenced stuff.
The hiphop I really like is the darker end of the spectrum, lots of Necro, Ill Bill, ICP, Twiztid, Tech N9ne..
I also spin hard acid and electro/breaks on occasion.
With Ableton though, I can mix pretty much any and everything.. Live mashups/remixes.. I love it!

Mestizosix9ParticipantI think most dj’s who’ve registered with this site are into crossing genre’s in some way shape or form..the site speaks for that..as far as i go,i usually prefer to mix many styles within an eve..unless i’m hired to specifically play a certain style or there’s a theme for an event i’m playing that i need to uphold..Since music is a language to me,i see it the same as food or just about anything general in life..
I’d be sick to death if i had to eat hamburgers everyday(especially if i was vegan)..i’ve gotta have some Thai,Italian,Indian,Spanish,etc..The same goes with music, film,my preference with women, art, video games,fashion..Unless just obviously badly done, cornball, out of tune, out of key,off phrase, phoney, weak, generic or just plain poser..I love many flavors,vibes,frequencies,messages..Exotic..
The whole 9…..Period.

Nuclear FlowerParticipantya know I knew this dj in North Carolina who went by the name of Prime Mover. He is not the same prime mover you would find on myspace nowadays….but anyway he was simply the most phenomenal dj I have ever heard. he was a genre-crossing master. his sets would center around drum and bass but transition into hip-hop, jazz, funky house, funky jazzy breaks, dark breaks…but all in a single set. you have to break the rules to blend all of these styles into a single set….yet he does it with this smooth and captivating style that redefines what it is to be a dj. I don’t know what happened to him but I have a few of his mix tapes still around. if anyone is interested I’ll put them on my pc, clean em up and put them up somewhere on the web.
AdSense 336x280May 13, 2007 at 11:44 am #621341
mrvpParticipantI think you’ve got to feel what your playing is, if you don’t feel it your crowd won’t feel it. It means you do have to vary your mixing styles as certain types of records won’t blend and need to be drop mixed or cut. I think it add’s a bit of fun mixing house and 80’s pop/early electro records (think late 90’s classic Daft Punk, Basement Jaxx sets or Jeremy Healy and current man of the moment Diplo’s Fabric Live CD). At the end of the day good records never go out of fashion.
AdSense 336x280May 25, 2007 at 4:14 pm #622753
SnakebitedjsParticipantNowadays i cater for the whole crowd. Before i used to only mix UKG.
I play everything and anything from Drum & Bass to R&B, Dancehall to Rock.
AdSense 336x280May 26, 2007 at 5:04 am #622801
DJ REDParticipantI’m a hip-hop DJ, but i will listen to and mix almost anything….reggae, r&b, country, rock, old school, and even international stuff too (ie. chinese, japanese, portuguese, german, russian…etc.) i dont care if i cant understand the language. if it sound good then ill mix it. im not into house, trance, dnb or anything like that though.
AdSense 336x280May 28, 2007 at 12:12 am #623017
ravenParticipantWhen I’m booked I’m booked as Hardcore Techno Dj. I prefer records of Hellfish, Producer, Radium, Speedfreak and stuff like that. I like tracks that are influenced by HipHop and those that are earwigs. But this kind of music is influenced by every genre and I play everything even oldies and when necessary strongly pitched. But the whole mix should be Hardcore or Gabba, because that’s why I’m booked.
There are not so many new and good releases. That’s why I only practice with battle/scratch records and HipHop, also because scratches and mixing can be heard better and I learn more this way. So I listen to HipHop and breaks at home most time and won’t be fed up with my favorit hardcore records at party and my freestyle mix is going to be an adventure that entertaines me too.

cosmicjiveParticipantGlitch/breaks/dubstep/hip hop
AdSense 336x280May 24, 2008 at 4:46 am #650037
AdeedaParticipantI like all kinds of genres so but I almost always am going to start with some hip hop and pop stuff. From there I’d go to some more uptempo hiphop into house then electro house. Depening on how well the electro house is going I’d go into some deeper house and trance type stuff. This Is my dream type of set only for people who like to dance though.
If the electro house didn’t go over to well I’d just switch to some hard beats sounding stuff (ala baltimore club music).
If I think the crowd would go for it I’d throw in some old school 80s type stuff. I may even spice it up a bit and throw in some old school punk.
