DJ_BradyParticipantApparently ProTools by Digidesign is used in every studio, I must have read it somewhere on this forum or another site… anybody know anything about it? It can be used on Mac and PC I know, I downloaded it but couldnt open it fully because I hadnt got the Digidesign ´´hardware turned on´´, so this stuff must be for the big guys in the bussiness because it seems to have a lot of power and be used by famous artists and a must in every studio. Who knows nethin about it? Any1 used it?

housefly88ParticipantThere are quite a few of us that post on here that use Pro Tools. You cannot use Pro tools with out hardware, You will need an Mbox, 001,002, TDM,HD system to be able to use the software.

DJ_BradyParticipantI would have thought it would be hard to learn since the pros use it, I thought you would need qualifications, course learning the code and stuff for it.

smart1123ParticipantYeah it’s all about the hardware, just did a mix on my Mix+ system 52 Tracks of audio about 100 bands of eq and lots of compressors, CPU usage… 5%
That says it all

Once you’ve done that you can pretty much figure out how to use any production software with practice.
Pro Tools does have certification programs you can take to become a Certified Pro Tools guru. I beleive there are 4-6 levels of certification. I have been told by friends who are working on getting certified that it is not easy. I have thought about getting certified myself. If you are an audio engineer and you are pro tools certified you are in a great situation to make some serious money.
Just something to ponder.

I dunno about where you are but here there is only one school offering digidesign certification and they charge $25000 for one year and your certification expires after a year, I think you would be better off to take some of the money and go do a Sound Engineering course somewhere that includes some protools but makes sound the focus, then once you have a better idea what you’re going to do with it, take you $15000 change and buy yourself a nice protools system.
That said if all you want to do is write music then you’ll find protools a bit clunky as it is an engineers environment, you might be better off with something like Live or Logic.

And quite powerful (love the pencil tool).yeah learn it, getting certified is big $$$ and I still have to train them to use a patchbay when they show up as noobs at the studio

I live in Florida and I’m sorry but wherever you are an instructior at is not the only place in the world to get certified for Pro Tools. Let’s be serious I don’t have to move to Canada to get certified. I agree the certification is expensive but there are ways to get certified for very little money.
I have a friend who at the moment is an audio production student in the local Orlando area( and it’s not Full Sail). He works as a lab assit for the program and has already recieved his level 2 certification and the school paid for it. The school also pays for their instructors to get certified. If you are worth it some employers will also pay to get their employes certitfied and will renue your certification when they expire.
I also agree with the fact that you need to know lots about audio production theory before you start playing with the big toys.
Patchbay confusion? It’s only signal flow. My grandma could run a patchbay like it was her boy toy.

johnferrarisParticipantIf ur just starting out, its a little pointless spending loads of money on h/w and s/w. Its like taking up golf and spending £8000 on ur clubs… yes, they may be shit hot, but they’re not gonna make u play any better if ur just starting out. If u can’t swing a club, no special fancy expensive club is gonna help. Plus, if u don’t go anywhere with it/get bored/not ur cup of tea/never get past the bedroom-producer stage then u’ve just wasted a fat load of £££
