1stStringParticipantVinal all the way. CDs are cool for the car but I have seen many CD based DJs get clowned at nightclubs for pretending to do things they arent (e.g. scratching, etc).
AdSense 336x280January 12, 2007 at 6:29 pm #609681
KaRguLParticipantVinyls have this true essence of hip hop culture, CDs are cool because of easy way to find old tracks but I prefer vinyls anyway

epexParticipant
I’ve been into electronic music and remixing for while now, but never got into djing. What are the differences between cd and vinyl turntables, and what are the pros and cons of both?
Just wondering because I was thinking about buy a set and don’t know which one to go with.[/quote:3a1t1yzv]
Vynal is 100% times better for quality, cd isent that bad actully but not as gd as some vynals
AdSense 336x280January 14, 2007 at 1:20 am #609923
DJ AutographParticipantthere is nothing that compares to the feel of vinyl. I use Serato and it’s the perfect solution for those of us who are vinyl purist but are tired of lugging 6 50lb crates to gigs. TURNTABLES FOREVER!!!
AdSense 336x280January 14, 2007 at 1:24 am #609924
Winston_S_EsqParticipantHow come nobody talks about 8 track cassette tapes on this site? Well i prefer these over vinyl and I ain’t never owned a CD. I heard one once but I already had it on 8 track.

kasmoParticipantI prefer vinyls but use and buy cd’s to!
btw: first post. Nice site!

CJ BeatzParticipantAlways go with vinyl, theres just so much more u can do, I’d recomend Serato, best of both worlds. I swear by it!
AdSense 336x280January 17, 2007 at 3:56 am #610310
DJ AutographParticipantReveal,
I used to think so too. It took me a while to suck it up and switch to Serato and like CJ I will swear by it as well. I can jump on a train or in a cab and hop from gig to gig no hastle. One bag that’s it!! The thing I used to hate the most is packing all that ish back up and moving through a crowded club with 4 crates. No more……

F1 MikeParticipantI have 2 CDJ 1000mk3, a DJM 800, and an efx1000, all Pioneer, and if you’re starting out I would say CDs are definately the way to go because cds are easy to manage, but I am now thinking of getting some turntables to become a more skilled dj. Without doubt it takes more skill to use vinyl.
However, I don’t understand the arguement of sound quality – when you’re in a nightclub dancing to a track, can you honestly tell without looking at the dj booth whether it is playing from cd or vinyl?
The quality of the cd copy matters yes – you can get good cds (best to use originals) or bad cds burned from overcompressed files.
BUT is the same not true of vinyl? There are loads of records out there which have been pressed from a bad source, or the press itself may be manufactured from poor equipment. If the source copy is good, and the amp system & related equipment is good, then it will sound great whether it is on vinyl or cd.
The main arguement for me is whether or not cd djs can create the same atmosphere. To that my opinion is perhaps the crowd will take more convincing, but if the dj plays the right tracks, does a good job of it, and has a bit of fun with effects and ‘on the fly’ remixes then in the end it doesn’t make much difference in big clubs. Most major djs are switcing to CD only.
In a small club or bar, that is when vinyl will be more presentable I recon.
AdSense 336x280January 20, 2007 at 2:29 am #610639
DJ AutographParticipantI wouldn’t say CD’s are definately the way to go if you are just starting out. In my opinion its best to learn the harder of the two first. Most DJ’s who start out with CD’s tend to have difficulity switching to vinyl. I have yet to see a DJ do it successfully, maybe you will be the first Mike.
Secondly I think using vinyl is another dimension to your performance. yes anybody can play track in the right order and get a crowd moving BUT, in my experience, turntable djs bring an added dimenson to a party.

serpiente97Participantvinyl wins every time….i’m huge into reggae and there’s so many tunes available only on vinyl that choosing vinyl is a no brainer….there’s nothing like holding a nice chunk of vinyl in your hands and dropping it on the 1200….just don’t get the same feeling from a cd
AdSense 336x280March 12, 2007 at 11:11 pm #615592
snuggzParticipantI have been Djing for a while & from my experence it’s good to be able to know both how to mix cds & vinyl…. You never know what’s avalible & what’s not!

jpodtbcParticipanti’m surprised at some of the responses here. someone even said you can do more with vinyl.
what?
WHAT?
are you crazy? in the digital realm you can do WAY more than with vinyl. WAY WAY WAY WAY more. people here like vinyl and it does have a purist appeal. i started on vinyl but i care more about the technical abilities than the purist feel. i’ve now moved almost entirely to digital. i still buy records but i record them so that i can play around on serato (i have the ttm 57 sl). i can set cue points, loops, master pitch, and have way faster access when it’s in my laptop library than when it’s in my record crate.
i’m going to say digital all the way. cds are ok but serato kick ass on cds because you don’t have to keep burning fresh discs of new tracks. i just load the mp3/wav/ogg into my library and i’m good to go.

spazParticipantdj-kcez tranzistor wrote:

CD players is much usefull than the vinyl decks (turntables) because u will get better sound qualitywasn’t going to say anything…but
Vinyl sounds WAY better than cd any day. For one it’s not compressed and the tonality of the sound is that much better over a live PA. Granted after a good few play’s the sound quality will deteriorate if you don’t know how to look after your vinyl (and general wear and tear). So ripping high quality 320kbps mp3 copies of mp3’s would be sufficient (if you know how to do it properly).[/quote:izdsnbzq]what about the vinyl noise and by the way i don’t use mp3 because the compressed will not be in the same quilty of the un compressed i talk about the audio cd normal un compressed ones and about "ripping high quality 320kbps mp3 copies of mp3’s would be sufficient " yes offcourse but i still don’t take about the compressed sound
because i can’t go in such compare while i know that uncompressed is better than the compressed one
[/quote:izdsnbzq]Yo man I have used both CD’s and vinyl. I’ve compared them both and the best way to go is def vinyl. For one if you spin vinyl a lot more people are attracted to that and feel they are getting what the pay for. The quality cant be beat either. As far as the quality in high quality mp3s go anything over 192kbps is better than cd. At that point the compression doesnt come into play. Smaller mp3s are where you lose that quality because they take bits out. Trust me I have two buddies that broadcast on Kiss FM and they both use Serato. I DJ clubs and use Serato and you can’t compare the control of vinyl and cds. There are so many more things you can do with vinyl rather than cd…so what I’m getting at is GO VINYL you wont be sorry. BTW make sure you buy Tecnnics 1200’s. Even if you buy them used on eBay it will be the best investment you make

AdSense 336x280March 18, 2007 at 6:04 pm #616080
djson69Participantvinly is the best and classic way of learning to djing,
but using cd’s is much cheaper and finding hard to find music is much easier.. If you afford both then I suggest try both…… You might get the traditonist telling you that cd’s is not the way to dj. But I have seen even the top dj’s using cd’s in there mixes….AdSense 336x280March 18, 2007 at 7:11 pm #616089
DJ NickParticipantVinyl have a very good song but it is very expensive for little purse (teenagers…) and if we want all news tracks… :s

acheadKeymasterNothing compares to the sound of vinyl, it has a low end that can’t compare to CD!!
It also has a sound that is not as clean as cd which makes the warmth that much more real!!!AdSense 336x280March 22, 2007 at 6:54 pm #616486
coojuiceParticipantSome modern cd players are excellent for the vinyl feel but turntables just feel and look better.

trancelationParticipantIf you wanna do it right get a set of 1200’s and a set of 800cdj/1000cdj.
