honestly if u want something that easy to use w/ outside device like a midi kybrd for example i would drop ableton and get Reason…awesome program for when using a device

DazmondParticipantAbleton Live is wicked, i’ve been writing a few tracks with Alex Kidd, and the ability to share work files etc is awesome. We’re looking at doing some completely live shows soon using ableton and a bit of hardware, live is perfect for this kind of setup in my opinion

echofusionParticipantHi guys
Well its been since the release of Live 5.2 that I have really gone into using Live. I dont personally use it as yet for djing, just for creating mix sessions for my radio show and for basically creating mixes.
i have tried using it for remixing and production, but I feel live is still a baby in the world of DAWs. I find the delay created when using external MIDI/Usb synths or even internal Au/VST virtual instruments not acceptable by todays standards. When Ableton sorts these out and optimizes to work on Apple Intel hardware properly then i will use it fully in my setup! Even on top PC setups I find it very strange when i get the above issues!
As a Djing tool well its sort of "Lazy Djing":P But to tell you the truth its a real TIMESAVER when you have to create mixes!
Peace!

acheadKeymaster[quote quote="stomper":1nt7ijra]Im wondering about the DJ’ing with Ableton.
I never tried Abelton but far as i know u can make a production live or tweak a track but how does it work for DJ’ing if u dont want to tweak the track?
Is it something like the final scratch?[/quote:1nt7ijra]Yes Ableton is great, but m_audio’s torq is an amazing option too… and its cheapAdSense 336x280March 18, 2007 at 8:27 am #616022

jamesh1985ParticipantAbelton is a great tool for making your own re-edits and remixing but I’m still not 100% on using it for a live set, if I see someone playing out on it performing say a traditional house set then I think its taking the easy option, on the other hand using the program to its potentinal can result in some wicked posabilitys, something along the lines of a 2ManyDJ’s set.
I’ve seen people who have obviously perfected a two hour set at home the week before playing then watching the crowd react in a bad way with the DJ not being able to react, I know more advance users will be able to build a set on the fly but most can’t.
My current software is Live 6.05 with a UC-33 and a MacBook pro, for me though CDJ’s are still my weapon of choice!
Fair play to lide01, thats some nice work with that controller!

acheadKeymasterI use ableton mainly as a production tool but it can be used to dj. I love the look and feel of vinyl when doing live gigs even if they are encoded plates. You should check out m-audio’s torq you can rewire to your production software and use vst.

acheadKeymasterjust started out with music production and got a copy of ableton live 6.0.2, and i must say, it is a bit complicated. but then again what isnt for a newcomer. im finding out new things everyday and it is very useful to clean up and remix tracks for my dj friends. are there any other tools better out there to produce mashups/mixes.

lazeParticipantyep,
nice digital mixing, opening tons of new possibilities, but has summtin better sound than normal vinyl? you know how nices to scratch on wax……anyway my opinions that in the future, mixing vinyls will be different genre than digital mixing, both are goddamn interesting

Is it something like the final scratch?[/quote:1eg0sa0z]Live is actually pretty amazing in that it automatically runs all your tracks at the same bpm and has a cross fader built in to it. I’ve DJ-ed with vinyl, Serato, and CD turntables for five years now and there is definitely a learning curve to beat matching with a new medium. This can definitely get in the way of a DJ’s creativity since so much energy has to be devoted to beat matching. Live eliminates that and allows you to focus on programming and arraging your mixes, not actually mixing them. Some may argue that is destructive to the art of live mixing but that’s a whole other discussion. Good luck, have fun!AdSense 336x280March 31, 2007 at 10:31 am #617224
acheadKeymasterGreat topic!!!!

I am a DJ looking to trade in my CDJ’s for an Ableton rig and get into some real "live" elements and production in my shows. Can anyone give me some info on what "spec" laptop i should be looking at buying? I only have a desktop at the moment, and ill be using a PreSonus Firebox as the firewire audio interface.
I want this machine to be able to be my "one stop shop" for all my recording, production, mixing and live DJ’ing needs….at least until i can afford multiple machines for each purpose. It needs to be reliable as HELL because i will not have any CDJ’s to fall back on at my gigs. That may be stupid….but hey….if "Ableton and a PC" is the way of the future….then it needs to stand up to CDJ’s and turntables in terms of reliability right?!

Here’s the catch. I am on a budget so i cant simply go out and buy the BEST of the BEST….so if you could recommend a "minimum" and an "ideal" spec list i could try and build or find a "happy medium" between the two that suits my budget!

Thanks all!!

acheadKeymasterI’m wondering if anyone uses thier oxygen 8 as a controller for dj-ing with ableton live. I’ve been giving it a crack using the mod wheel as a cross fader and the keyboard buttons to cancel out certain frequencies. Does anyone using this kind of setup have any tips?
AdSense 336x280April 7, 2007 at 11:31 pm #618005
acheadKeymasteri’ve got a gig today that i actually *have* to use ableton for. the event is genuinely cool – but the promoter doesn’t think house is sophisticated enough… so i’m breakin out the G4 and getting a little kooky.
apparently, house music coming out of a computer is more intellectually palatable. that’s irony for you right there.
i figure if i’m gonna use my computer, i should really try to do things that i couldn’t do with regular decks .
the problem i have when i use ableton is that i get TOO thick in the mix. i’m fidgity enough as it is. i’ve found thay paying as much attention as i do to beatmatching actually helps my sets maintain a certain flow that seems to work better on the dancefloor. should be alright today tho – as i’ll be playing for the chin scratchers.
restrictions are an important part of creativity. i play CDs too and am constantly frustrated by the the lack of record sleeves. the visual component makes it easier to improvise effectively. with ableton – it’s pretty damned hard not to prepackage everything upfront.
and that is for sucks.

acheadKeymasterI´m Using ableton live and serato scratch live for live acts
AdSense 336x280April 16, 2007 at 5:11 am #618882
acheadKeymasterI’m an Ableton user as well. And CDJ. And Traktor DJ Studio.
Even though this is my first, what’s annoying is reading all these people asking for help in using a program. Last time I checked, this was an Acapella forum, not an Ableton or Traktor or Serato how-to forum.
Peace.

Personally, I don’t use live like this at all, but you can see where your options are almost limitless.
