vangrooverParticipanti have beeen using live for over two years now, Tim Fuller and I do "Live" set he sings and i "spontanous compose" sounds great, i used to drag out the O1V, the Triton, the Juno and the MPC to do the same thing I can do with a lap top and UC-33 controller, I did however recently try those fancy new novation controllers !!!! very nice i need one now but $$ is the only thing holding me back at the moment.

AdSense 336x280November 5, 2006 at 10:07 pm #602099
acheadKeymasterI got Live 6 soon as it when it was available! But only because I got v5 a few weeks before and, therefore, got v6 for $0.
I’m hoping that the music magazines will be running ‘Live’ special features soon, w/- tutorials. I’ve seen some Live 6 reviews but I’m a noob, don’t have a lot of free time and need all the help I can get…
Talking of help, I had a breakthrough with Warping at the weekend. I understood the concept of Warping from reading the manual and web-sites etc, but the applied use of warping hadn’t clicked with me, until I got Ableton’s newsletter, which pointed me to here…
http://www.dancetracksdigital.com/liveready/
These guys have a template with 3 pre-warped and edited tracks in, so I loaded them up and something clicked after about 30 seconds. Now, this is real entry level stuff but it was a big help for me. You don’t have to have the full version of Live to do this, you can do it with the Live demo version too.AdSense 336x280November 5, 2006 at 11:07 pm #602103
acapellaKeymasterHi FlexMartin!
Always good to here feedback from other Live users. It’s a really good thing that dancetracksdigitial are onto I’m sure. Their is surely a must have for a lot of people.
Thanks for the heads up on that one.

DjJoeyCParticipantlive is the best program on the market
AdSense 336x280November 6, 2006 at 7:01 am #602209
acheadKeymasterOne of the best suggestions I could give to anyone starting out with Live to DJ is to avoid thinking of it as a tool to do stereotype dj’ing. That thinking pattern severely restricts ur creativity with this program. Jus forget the word DJ and start to think of the word ‘perform’ and you’l start to realize its power!

AdSense 336x280November 6, 2006 at 9:50 pm #602519
acheadKeymasterI’ve been using it for to DJ and i love that there are so many tricks you just can’t do with vinyl. Of course, my computer is busted so actual live performance is out of the question in fear of skipping. At least for parties I throw that means I get to party with every else with the mix on the iPod! (vinyl purists would be way mad)

acheadKeymasterDude, best visit a SW cracking forum to discuss cracking SW.
But you can get your hands on Ableton Live to try it out for free anyway, from Abletons website. It’s the full version but you can’t save your projects. So you can just try it for mixing. One warning though, you will probably like it and want the full version even more.

dj.ScrewheadParticipantFor all those people who still aren’t quite sure how to use Ableton to DJ,
It’s done mainly for drum and bass mixing, but you can apply it to any other style reall (just don’t go playing your trance/techno at 172bpm
)I need to get a laptop for actually doing live sets out with ableton, but I’ve been making mixes at home for the past few months and I end up amazing myself with what I end up doing..
Anyone who wants to get an idea of some of the kinds of crazyness you can do with it, you can check out this mix I did:

>>> Pendulum – Slam
The Upbeats – Craven Raven
>>Bobby Boris Picket – The Monster Mash
Fear Factory – Remanufacture

>>BSE + Noisia – Hideous
The Upbeats – Lick-a-Demon
>>Ill Bill feat. Necro – Chasing the Dragon

>>Prodigy – Breathe

acheadKeymasteri had been using mixmeister for quite a while, but i recently decided to try making mixes in live. needless to say, there is no comparison. live does everything mixmeister could do, and infinite amounts more. i have yet to try traktor or atomix, but i feel fine with live right now. it’s unbelievable how many options the fx routing and automation gives me. i would have to say that ableton is the best program i’ve encountered so far. it is so simple, yet so versatile and powerful. a really good solution for it’s somewhat week sample packs is to rewire it with reason. this interface works perfectly, making it incredibly easy to record high quality sample loops and whatnot. i’m still an amateur but my mixes are getting more and more advanced with the creativity that ableton allows me.

mrvpParticipantJust wondered what everyones (well the Ableton Jock’s at least) typical method of mixing is?
I’m new to the package and am typically queuing up a couple of audio channels with tracks all at around the same tempo (110 – 140bpm). Setting up loops with no vocal at the end of each track (if they are edits – otherwise just using the base line at the end of the track) and then setting up A and B channels, and using the slowfade crossfader curves and mixing between channels. Is there a better way of doing this?
Can you drop the bassline out like on a deck?
Should I set up an intro loop? (usually have 20 seconds to blend between the out loop on the previous track and the first vocal even on an edit – which too me is plenty).
Mixing between 113bpm and 125bpm at a master tempo of 120bpm sounds fine, but how do you switch to something at 135bpm? (am currently mixing 125pbm~ish tracks, and changing master tempo as I drop the slower track out or at a key change/appropriate point – sounds hideous sometimes)Top package, great thread.
Thanks in advance,
AdSense 336x280December 20, 2006 at 11:02 pm #607217
acheadKeymasterI’m new to the package too. I’m mostly playing tech’ stuff so don’t worry about vocals much and haven’t got into using loops yet.
I’ve got for 4 audio tracks and use the top 2 slots in each track. I’ve set-up the keyboard to trigger the 2 clips and stop all clips in each track e.g. for track one; Q=launch clip 1, A=launch clip 2, Z=stop clips + i’ve got the EQ3 device in each track and have setup a key (1) to toggle the low on/off.
I’ve repeated this for track 2 using keys W,S,X & 2 and tracks 3 & 4 using the other keys.
I use the mouse to tease the volume up and down on each track but this isn’t ideal, a midi contoller would be nice.
I’ve only used a change in master tempo too, but do you know you can nominate a bpm for a whole scene? (right-click the scene name) You could have the faster track on it’s own in, for example, scene 3 and when you launch that scene (not just the clip) the tempo changes so you quick-cut to the faster track.AdSense 336x280January 13, 2007 at 12:06 am #609718
acheadKeymasterim on ableton too. once i made the transition i never looked back! the possibilities with this amazing program are freakin endless!
