ElkieParticipanti played at a night recently where a few of the djs were playing with live. the way thay used it lead me to beleive that it was simply a cop out, and theres no real skill involved. when i stepped up with a big sack of wax, they were all pretty shocked, and when i started my set, there was a needle missing off one of the tts, so it was pretty obvious they werent expecting anyone to be spinning vinyl, which i thought was quite odd!
but then someone showed me a ideo of someone mixing with the apc40, and that was amazing!
i think the thing with live is the more you put into it, the more you get out. it can be used at a shamefully basic level, but if youre willing to learn the ins and outs, the results can be breathtaking!

ianlt81Participanti have been djing from ableton from about 3 4 years. and have to say that laptop based djing is going to take over. you have more control and more to play around with and time Stretchin is 2nd to none.

caseybob419Participant
For all those people who still aren’t quite sure how to use Ableton to DJ,
It’s done mainly for drum and bass mixing, but you can apply it to any other style reall (just don’t go playing your trance/techno at 172bpm
)I need to get a laptop for actually doing live sets out with ableton, but I’ve been making mixes at home for the past few months and I end up amazing myself with what I end up doing..
I bet you had no idea that you would help someone 3 years later. I’m new to Ableton and couldn’t figure it out precisely. Your link and a couple youtube videos have given me the tools to really get started. Thank You.

Here is a link to one of the videos I found especially helpful. [/color:flzk48j8] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8W6BWkRNEigAdSense 336x280January 12, 2010 at 5:00 am #676072

tabramoffParticipantI just picked up a Launchpad with Ableton Live 8 Launchpad Edition as my first serious mixing program and controller and I don’t think it could be any more enjoyable. However, I haven’t gotten the hang of everything yet. If there’s anyone on here that would be generous enough to answer a couple of my questions it would be greatly appreciated. Please send me a PM, thanks!

I thought it’d be easier if I could talk one on one with someone directly. I’ll post a new thread though.

cosmicjiveParticipantAbleton is great for DJing because you can make your sets your own by adding your own instrumentals, beats; drop acapellas with the push of a button. Seriously, vinyl purists are hanging on to silly technology. You guys remind me of religious extremists who are still living according to outdated morals.
AdSense 336x280July 26, 2010 at 4:14 pm #681375
hillbourneParticipanti use logic predominantly with ableton as slave, this is really quick for throwing down ideas, then bounce down to logic to arrange.

Mecalto RossaParticipantI am moving to Ableton, i have the Live set all arranged and all tracks neamed, beatmapped & color coded but until i have the outboard midi controllers i want i wont use it on stage, no point if you just have your laptop, it looks like your checking facebook!

SaintPaulixParticipantI’m interested in learning Live for DJ purposes. I haven’t been experimenting with it much but I do plan on it. has anyone ever used Live with a buttonpad controller such as the trigger finger or Korg padKontroller? if so let me know, b/c I’m curious. I’ve done some midi assignments with original beats that I’ve made with Live and it’s great for that. I just haven’t loaded other people’s songs on there to sync them up to my tunes.

SP[/quote:1m09qzia]Ive been using ableton for a while (but not for DJing), I have a akai MPK which has the pads on it and an behringer FCB foot controller.
I have tried setting up a DJ set a couple times with that equipment using the pads to trigger tracks and the foot pedals to trigger tracks and i much prefer the foot pedals as i try to incorporate alot of guitar/bass live looping in what i do so it leaves my hands kinda tied up (but even that can be fixed with automated track launching).
I actually prefer using those pads for effects switching and/or single non-loop samples(like a rapper saying "yeah"). I talked to a local DJ while he was performing and he showed me he was using his pads for the Stutter Edit VST, which is something else you can use them for in a live setting.
Basically, pads are very useful if you want to use them live, i would personally stay away from them for looped track launching unless you have only 4 tracks per column otherwise you will be switching between different hardware setups to launch different tracks. I have used an akai APC on my friends stuff an that is definitely the way to go for total audio track control (launching, volume, etc).
this is just my preference and opinion though, so try to find what suits you best.
(of course this would all be moot if Ableton would let us have the red box for drum pad control……

def26xParticipantive used ableton for dj’ing before – dont like it much personally. i think abletons brilliant for getting live performances on the go etc. if you can get your hands on an evolution uc-33, they’ve got loads of knobs and sliders to personally midi map.
