Do it yourself acapellas or DIY refers to the procedure of manually separating a vocal-only portion of a music track from its instrumental counterpart; also known as vocal extraction. Lots of techniques, advice and help in here for creating that very special D.I.Y acapella. (NO REQUESTS)
1. First of all GET THE CD PROMO with the exact album version and instrumental version or club mix/club mix instrumental
2. A wav editor like SOUND FORGE or any other with a FLIP/INVERT function
3. An audio software like ACID, CUBASE, LOGIC AUDIO,ETC.
Now, in my case, I have the cd promo of donna summer - i got your love EDDIE BAEZ EXTENDED MIX, EXTENDED INSTR., I have sound forge and acid.
STEP 1:
Open sound forge 8, extract the EXTENDED INSTR, the I hightlight the whole song and I use the FLIP/INVERT preset on sound forge and SAVE IT.
Then I open ACID PRO 5,
I extract the EXTENDED MIX from the cd and I open the EXTENDED INSTR INVERTED (the one I just did ON SOUND FORGE), so I have 2 tracks and I put them together, I line-up both tracks from beginning to end, now here's the trick:
make both waveforms bigger, the biggest u can get, then line them up and play them both, If not right, keep moving those waveforms until u get them right, start from the middle, beginning or end or whatever it's easy for you, practice and pratice until u hear only the vocals and save that sucker.
In this case, I got a perfect acapella of donna summer i got your love.
I have success with:
nelly furtado - promisocus, no hay igual
sean paul - temprature
discofent ft. andrea martin, ll cool j - freeze
rihanna - unfaithfull, mariah carey - say somthing, rod steward - do you think i'm sexy, etta james - strung out.
The ones that didn't work well was rihanna - sos.
I hope you guys uunderstood it.
p.s. I just started doing these DYI ACAPELLAS, I will probably start checking my dj music collection to find me some cd promos with the album/instr and see If I can get some nice pellas for spins/remix.
Excellent site and some great tips! Will be having some fun trying to create my own acapellas later! This is OT but does anyone know aphrodite's music's hypnotising? There's a classic dance remix but i don't know who it's by. Anybody know the artist? It's not a request, i need the track for something i'm working on.
cool what sort of pograms are people using to make the DIY acapellas i have sound forge 8.0 can i do it all on there or do i need to get anything else. And if nt can any1 gide me through how to do it on sound forge 8.0
juno wrote:For the first method I think he only referred to flipping which is basically switching the full left and right channels so that you basically have the negative wave of the song. When you match up the original & the invert the instrumentals will cancel each other out. The vocals will remain since there is no negative vocal frequency on the instrumental to cancel them out.
Think about it like math: say the vocals are X and the instrumental surrounding them is 1
(X+1)
You need the opposite of the instrumental to cancel it out and leave the vocals. Negative one is the inverted instrumental - the opposite. Leaving you with just the vocal if done right.
(X + 1) - 1
I havent got it down yet but I know it works from some of the tries I've done. I would've never known about this stuff if it weren't for Tim though - cheers m8
I'm trying to figure out the best way to make rock pellas. I was trying to make one from Sweaet Child of Mine by Guns N Roses. THE PHASE CANCELLATION METHOD wont really work cuz there isnt an inst. and you cant loop it because its made live with no one tempo and even if it was, theres way to many guitars to make it sound any good. I also tried THE KNOCKOUT METHOD using Audiocity and it sounded like a robot having sex with a chicken.

Inverting the 'waveform'. If you was switching channels i.e. swapping left over to the right and vice versa, it wouldn't work.
