Brown PrideParticipantI’m posting this subject to have your opinions on how rappers should get their respect, (what they should and shouldn’t do to get respect in the rap game.)
In my opinion, if rappers really want to get respect they should try and give out a message every time they get on the mic. They Should try to be original and stop trying to be Pac or Biggie. If they can’t respect themselves why would they expect someone else to respect them? If rappers really wqant respect they should stop dissin’ other rappers for promotion in the game. They should rap about something important, something that the people want to listen to.
Any opininons?

squiffyParticipantI like an MC with real vocal dexterity with unique style. Charlie 2na from J5 or Abdominal (Who’s best work is when he teams up with DJ Format.)
I also love to hear MCs spitting topics that don’t usually get talked about. (Like when Abdominal MCs about hip-hop, but uses a dinner party as a one continuous metaphor throughout the song. Utter Genious! (Ill culinary behavior is the track and the accapella is available from this site.)
I don’t know whether me liking them earns them respect, but anyway…

Take the difference between Chingy and Mos Def – which one is Hip Hop? Of course its Mos Def – you can hear it, feel it, and almost taste it when you listen to him. He has credibility and respect as a Hip Hop artist while you can take a look at Chingy and say “yeah, i like some of his songs but this is more like pop….”
I go on what I like and I dont like what seems fake as hell. I dont give a damn if someone has street credibility, if they’ve been shot 9 times or whatever but they better have some creativity, interesting lyrics and tyte beats. I’ve always liked more underground artists b/c they seem to be less full of themselves. Overall, the music and the artist’s whole presentation as a vocalist or musician is what really gains them respect in my eye.

Most rappers who’ve had their #1 hit on the charts start making catchy fruity tunes about something that is completely unimportant. And I’m talking about Rap and Hip-Hop. Cuz, so far I’ve seen guys like Lil Jon, Eastside Boyz, and Ying Yang Twins who have tried to “evolutionize” the hip-hop music by going “crunk”. And to me, thats not hip-hop, thats a whole different category, like “club music” or “crunk music”. Hip-hop started with MC’s talking about their environment, not themselves, not their cars, their jewelry, and their $5,000,000 crib, thast not what hip-hop’s about.AdSense 336x280January 22, 2005 at 4:38 pm #568314
MelParticipantWell, there are several ways to get respect in the hip-hop game. One way, and probably the fastest way, is to shout out Biggie and Pac’s name, at least one time per album. People will then call you “conscience,” when really you’re just a dumb ass who’s following a marketing trend.
The second way is to shout out as many mainstream names as you can on your first single / album. *Cough* Slim Thug, The Game *Cough* But what they fail to realize is that they’re not building any ground work for themselves. Do you here rapper’s like Nas or Jay-Z spitting lines like “I rock Eminem and 50 Cent crowds.” With lines like that, you’re actually making those emcees bigger than what they are.
Another way is to die and then have a posthumus release. Another way is to suck Jay-Z’s dick (e.g. Lil’ Wayne, who suddenly began calling himself “young” and repping his last name, which happens to be the same last name as Jay Z’s; T.I. who rocks a Jay-Z t-shirt and Jay-Z’s not even dead).
