I either look at the BPM of the original track (or instrumental) or just match the vocal and beat up manually. This takes a little skill but you'll get better after a while. Most of the time you can notice the words that will fall on downbeats b/c they have emphasis on them. Then match those words up with the downbeats. Thats how I do
Take 50 cent "In the club" acapella as an example:
You can find me in the CLUB.... <- if you listen to the way he says certain words like CLUB you can tell how they flow with the beat even if the beat isnt there. CLUB is said on the first downbeat of the measure even though its the last word of that verse. Hope that makes sense. Anyway, fit em together and you'll have your BPM. I'm gonna start looking for a BPM list on the web to post up here. |

^ i use the original track usually
or sometimes if u run a search on google and tyoe the name of the artist, track and then write bpm it comes up.
some american playlists and cds list the bpms which is really cool.
^ would defintely be interested if someone compiled a large data base of the bpm of tracks! |

Hey guys,
I found this website that offers a totally free bpm analyzer for download. Its only about 1 meg. Its a simple drag and drop operation. Drag your wavs, mp3's and it calculates the bpm of them. To get it you do have to register your name and email...BUT...I put a fake name and fake email and it took me straight to the download page. I put in a fake email cos I didn't want tons of spam.
here's the link, hope its helpful, also I hope this isn't considered spam as I am just sharing with you guys what I came across whilst surfing.

I'm gonna have to go with juno reactor, cuz I'm the exact same way. If its an instrumental I go by the original track...but its just as easy to know when the song is gonna land on a downbeat. But something to think about tho...sometimes when my software analyzes a songs BPM it'll say its 150...but in all actuality its 75 b/c the song is done in cut time if somebody understands that along with me(was in band for 4 years lol) so you can't always trust the BPM it says in writing give it your own feel, and if it doesn't sound right then keep doing it till it does |
