Postby Rage2007 on Wed Jan 12, 2011 12:26 pm

I have a problem, i can never seem to make my beats in the same key as acapellas, i just dont seem to hear it! I was just wondering if there any tutorials or tips i could be given to help me train my ear for it?

Actually there are 12 notes in an octave.

I posted a similar answer to this question elsewhere i think but what I would suggest is to play the vocal and set up a synth sound (like a pad) with some sustain and try each note in the octave to see what seems to work. To an untrained ear, this may be difficult at first though.

Software like Mixed In Key might help you.
Just recently I found out that the key results from Mixmeister are estimated to be correct only 60% of the time so stay away from that
for this purpose hehe.

Big ups to DJ Prince, this is a fantastic site.

i agree with this one(except the 8 keys). Most songs are in major or minor. (There are some weird scales out their if you really want to get into the amount of different keys and chord variations). And trying to find every single note that will sound good will take a little bit of time.

If im trying to play note for note along with the vocals then i might use software to help me out. I use an autotune on the vocals which displays the keys that are being sung/played then take the autotune out after i have it figured out

....and i just realized how old this post was after writing all that  , hopefully the autotune info is useful to someone

IMHO it's still the eaysiest way to grab a keyboard and try to play the melody while listening to the acapella (or better the original song, so you have the "everything around"^^)
For some songs it could be a bit more difficult but till now, i've always got it in 5-15 minutes...
