coojuiceParticipantThis has been something I’ve thought about for a while now but I’m really in 2 minds as to what to do
Should I sell my turntables or should I keep them?
My brain is telling me get rid of them but my heart says otherwise…
The story:
Originally I had the MK3 1210s (which weren’t out long before they changed them to MK5???) but some light fingered merchant banker decided that they would take them out of our van one evening (I still havent found out who!) so after the insurance finally came through I bought the MK5 ones about 2-3 years ago.
At the time I was still very much into buying records so I would still use them at home and at gigs back and forth. As time passed by our company demands and needs changed, so this inevitably lead to us keeping up with technology and purchasing cd decks and laptops for playing music and changing from vinyl to cd and digital files. At the time it felt really weird and "cheating" to be using anything other than turntables but this "guilt" soon passed away as it made much more sense to carry a larger collection of cds or mp3’s around in such small boxes than struggling with heavy record boxes with a limited collection. I’ll not go into the whole vinyl vs cd vs mp3 debate here, each has pros and cons and I like them all

Anyways…
I’ve had these decks for a while now and it honestly would feel like i’m getting rid of a friend as they feel part of me but I haven’t used them at home much in the past year and i’ve not used them out djing for at least 2 years. I guess I have it stuck in my head that if I get rid of them I will lose my DJ powers! (although I feel like i’m losing them anyway as I don’t Dj as often as I would like to or used too!)
Music wise too I’ve not bought any vinyl for approx. 2 years either so all of my newer music collection is in cd or digital file format, with around 500+ records just sitting there doing nothing!
I’ve just recently bought a dj controller and traktor software that I look to use for any gigs that I have in the near future and i’m in the process of transfering my cd collection to digital files so it looks even more unlikely that I will be using my turntables

Below are "practical" reasons for selling and keeping:
Sell
Don’t use anymore
Money made could go towards something else
Taking up valuable space in my studioKeep
Use with timecoded vinyl for use of digital tracks
Looking at the above list it would seem pretty obvious that it would be best to get rid but I just dont know! The only reason to keep them on my list is to use with software but I already have a controller for that! lol
I guess i’m just hoping that the world will see sense one day again and vinyl will be back in fully glorified fashion, and i’ll be there ready for it…
In the last 1-2 years i’ve also become more involved in trying to produce my own music rather than play it so this has taken up more of my money and time and extra cash for this is always needed!
So I put it to the good people of this site, should I sell or keep?
Please help a fellow dj out

Reggie_p75ParticipantI’m not a DJ but let us be aware of 1 thing in life:-
Life is full of sacrifices:-
Jesus (if ur religious)….. money 4 a few pints, cans or bottles…. mental health with women n their strange demands…. money again to buy shiny new music stuff or enhance the set-up….
If ur gonna be going transferring CDs and vinyl to digital format and u have tranferrable skills learnt on ur decks, to digital controllers, then if it was me I’d take the leap of faith n move on…. SELL THE DECKS (put a bit of echo on that for effect)
Either that or ponder when vinyl is gonna make its ressurgence and be armed to the teeth like some middle-American militia group for Vinyl Armaggedon….

coojuiceParticipantCheers Reggie!
I’m not religious in anyway (other than worshiping the wife if and when required
) so I guess it must all be in my head yet still I just cant bring myself to admit that i’d be better off getting rid!I’ll see what other people think but so far it’s 100% sell

The CutterParticipantKeep em….
I will never get rid of my records or my turntable. Yes most of them have been recorded to my computer so I could sell them but I won’t. I’d rather lug them around every time I move than get rid of them.

DJ LeGitlinParticipantI would sell and get some new sh*t! Maybe keep a few classics though…

JuggernautParticipantDON’T SELL!!!!
Especially being technics, which means you could drive over them with a van…or have them flooded (happened to mah babbies) and they’ll STILL run.
I’ve sold my cd decks (admittedly numarks) before i thought about selling my technics.
I’d never sell them tho…coz i got them for free, and will want them for nostalgic reasons when i finally take out an ennio morricone LP (haven’t opened those yet) and watch the grooves get turned into seductive sine waves through my speakers…
….i need a moment….

NickMcParticipantWell, you just gotta base your decision on what would benefit you the most…the money to get more music equipment that you would probably use more than the turntables, or the sentimental value of what probably really got you into everything in the first place. I am going through the same thing myself, as I have made the leap over to digital means of rocking out myself. I have decided to keep my turntables, and most definately all my vinal for a couple reasons… scratching on CDJ’s or even Serato is not really even comparible to original vinal. Alos, its pretty fun to go back every once in a while and play some of your old VINYL, not just digital copies of them. AND on top of that, I have made a few bucks by bailing out a couple partys that needed some last minute equipment!

nickkay83ParticipantDon’t sell man!
I’m a mk2 man myself, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Like yourself I’ve reluctantly had to get on board with the digital revolution in DJing, and have opted for the Serato Scratch package. This way I can keep some money in my pocket by not buying as much vinyl as before but I still have the option to flick over to phono if I so desire. Also, the thousands of record I own can still come in use.
I’d keep them, use your control records and get the best of both worlds. Also, keep the "fun" element in mixing. These bpm counters whilst being handy, take all the fun out of mixing for me.
ps, I’ll never get on board with CDJ’s… but I’ll never judge those that do.

coojuiceParticipantI’ve actually advertised them for sale (locally) for the past few days but no-one has got in touch so i’m going to just keep them for now.
I was looking to get cdj’s but i’m going to sell my midi controller I got and put the money towards serato instead. This way I can have the best of both worlds and I get to keep my faithful decks!
Funny thing is, they have not been used for djing for at least a couple of years and I ended up having to use them at an under 18s gig at the weekend I was helping out at doing the PA!
The last time I was looking to get rid of them 4 years ago the same kind of thing happened. I was asked to do a charity gig and ended up forming a disco hire company! lol
I think it’s just fate that i’ve to keep them…
