We have re-opened new registrations once more after a very long period of having our gates firmly locked. This was purely due to the fact that idiots out there are hellbent on automated and manual signups and then posting a shedload of hardcore p o r n on the site which was disgusting. We do not wish to see such posts being created on our site thank you very much.

We're obviously going to keep a more than watchful eye on this and please rest assured that our staff do their best but to all the existing members, please, please use the Report Post functionality if you see anything suspect. This will raise the alarm (not literally) to the team and rest assured they'll get on the case and look into the reported post.

Bottom line: Perhaps we are a victim of our own success.. where as we see ACAPELLAS4U going from strength to strength each year and growing exponentially, others see this as an opportunity to exploit, mass market and cause general chaos.

Just a thought. On my own site, I use admin-approved users only. I get emailed with every user registration and do a quick check, just google the email address and make sure it isn't on any spam list or anything else isn't glaringly obvious and voila. We probably handle 5-30 per week, takes maybe 10 seconds per user. About 90% of the signups are bogus spammer accounts. It's the only method I've found to truly eradicate spam from our forums while leaving user registration open.

Take into account that only about 40% of the people are on the forums, the rest are leechers, perfectly legit but non-communal contributors.

Also the site is HUGE 100k+ and people sign up every few minutes, not weeks. we can't spend our lives checking every application to join. it's not feasible.

Thanks for the idea, will be put into the think-tank Smilie_PDT

What about CAPTCHA? Is that enabled on registration?

mentioned that a while ago in the think-tank too. it's not enabled no, but there are easy workarounds to CAPTCHA too.

so i would assume the only way to get this place shut down, would be to infest if with p*rn bots.. and then report the site for hosting p*rn related activity... definitely making a UN-penetrable human verifier SIGN up SHOULD weed that out...

i know it's far fetched but some record companies may got to odd lengths to douse a fire they believe is burning them.

Hey GMoney,

This is just a no-go for ACAPELLAS4U purely because we receive about 50-100 registrations a day! Heck, if we left it to the admin around here to take care of all the registrations then no-one would ever get on board.

I don't have the time like I used to for my baby.. got to work now for a living.

here's an idea, with all the members there are now, you could turn the site into an invite only, so current members can invite people, and a list of who invites who will be kept so if someone invites some one that's shady, it will reflect on both parties, which would prevent in the long run people inviting... spam because they wouldn't wanna lose their own privileges, that would give more time for technology to provide a better captcha system or the idea maybe just the answer to preventing spam... 100,000 members should be suffice to end open sign up...at least until it can be practical to keep it oopen

You know, GWP, I'm pretty sure that this has been mentioned before and I'm too lazy to do a forum search for the 'invite only' phrase..

My tea's ready.. good point though, let me know what you find out (what was discussed back then) please if you do search.

Thanks,

acapella

I have also added reCaptcha now to the forum registrations..

Click http://recaptcha.net/ for more info..

the reports I'm hearing back from phpbb community is that forum owners once installed with reCaptcha pretty much experienced a 0 spam-bot sign up so this is really encouraging.

It's tried and tested and working, we have a 3-tier registration process in place from now.. Image Verification, reCaptcha and Are you Human check..
