Hi.
We're in development mode at the minute and I'd like to hear what ye'all think about lengths of audio streams when it comes to listening to the pellas before downloading.
Please remember that we don't have a server the size of Google so bandwidth IS an issue for us..
For those of you wondering (or have more knowledge of the existing setup than most) the length of acapella preview will NOT be at all affected by the file's bitrate.
Vote away!! |

| I voted 30seconds to 1 minute as there could be dead air at the beginning, especially if it's a DIY or from a multitrack. |

| really if its about checking the sound quilty then yeh i think 30 secs - 1 minute coz thats plenty of time, but ive downloaded acca's that are good quilty but have odd words here n there missing so not really much use to me, where as if i could of listened to over a minute of them i would have noticed and not downloaded!!! oh well :S |

| i said 10 to 30 secs, but provided that the preview be somewhere in the middle of the song... 30 secs should be enough to check the quality, but as otg mentioned, there is always a risk of dead air at the very beginning. |

I hear ya ((both of yas)) but the only issue we'd have with previewing the acapellas 30 secs in is that not all of our pellas are even 30 secs long.
We wouldn't wish to hard code anything into the new site which says "only feature previews for files over blah in length" - so it'd prob. make more sense to drop the preview say 10 secs in I reckon.
It's all changeable at a later date if we get something wrong anyway, that's the beauty of working with such a good dev.
Regards,
acapella. |

10 secs in would probably do. but wouldn't it be possible to just program it so that it just previews from the middle of the file, irrespective of its length?
sorry if i keep hassling you with these (potentially stupid) suggestions acapella |

Hehe, this isn't hassling mate, I actually like that a member here is interested in enough in an area of our site functionality and asking questions about it..
Your comment re: programming from halfway irrespective sounds the ticket.. will run it by my dev.

This all kind of depends on your server's or host's processing power as well as how much this feature is used but:
You could display different lengths depending on the pellas length.
You would need a key though. Im not sure if the pellas time that is displayed is a char or numeric value, but if its a char you could convert it to numeric or do something like this:
Add an additional column to the pella DB. Call it tunekey, make it a char for example.
A = 0-10 secs
B = 20-30 secs
C = 30+ secs
or whatever, i just made a few ones to get my point across. Then, use some sort of layered IF or some kind of switch code ( i dont know phbb or net programming but im sure soemthing like this exists ) like
switch (tunekey)
{
case 'A':
//10 sec preview
case 'B':
//30 secs preview
case 'C':
//1 min preview
}
If your pellas time is numeric, just plug in that in place of tunkey in the statement. Of course you might have to switch it to numeric from decimal.
This could give people longer preview times but keep things from being over the top in the case where some pellas are 10 secs.
I dont know if the halfway would be a good idea. One pella i downloaded was silence in the middle of it where the chorus should have been. It could just be a rare scenario though. |

| I think that between 30 sec and 1 minute is enough. In this time you have an idea about the quality of the ´pella. Is enough time too to quick the intro without voice that use to have the DIY acapellas |

| yea i agree, im only new here, but am loving the site and think that generally i know what i want so (not that i can yet) imagine i would only be previewing for audio quality... not to listen to the take to see if its what i need etc... |

| I said 30 sec - 1 min too, as other people mentioned it's long enough to get an idea of what the track is like. We've all downloaded tracks with 10 second previews that sounded great then found out the rest of the track was crap. Of course, even though I'm with lukin-88 in that I pretty much know what I need so I'm not going to just randomly preview every file to see what it is, undoubtedly there are some people who don't and will just preview everything at random until they find something they like, so I think making the previews be something you have to earn is a good idea. |

i downloaded an m.i.a. a cappella without previewing it, and it turns out its just four lines repeated for about thirty seconds, before cutting to the next song, even though it sas its over 3 minutes long...lame.
so, i vote 30-1 min. |
