AlownParticipantI am a new wanna-be DJ. I mostly listen to techno-ish music. I don’t know much hip-hop. If I wanted to DJ Hip-Hop I would be S.O.L. Other people might know a lot good hip-hop bands and not so many techno. So I thinking we should have thread where people can post recommendations for bands of the different genres of music.
You can classify the bands however you want. House, electro-house, trace, techno, soulful-house, hip-hop, acid, drum n bass or jungle, reggae, whatever.
Because I am noob, I have a very limited music library, but this is what i got.
You could post bands that you think might be easy for a newb to start DJ’ing with.Drum n Bass: Pendulum (love them)
Trace: Juno Reactor
Electronic: Chemical Brothers, Junkie XLI don’t know of any others, anything you recommend would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: opps I hope this thread isn’t to much like the other one.

ChunkyEatsMyDinnerParticipantAh, if only DJing was that simple.
I asked a very similar question myself when I started playing US hip hop.
I did get some good responses but found that knowing the good artists is just the tip of the iceberg.
Particularly with hip hop, some of the artists release a new tune every week and only
about 5% of them ever get good reactions to certain dancefloors.
It also goes without mentioning that different parts of the US have very different tastes.Start by knowing the charts

Then get an idea what your dancefloor wants.
Its a lot of work but its all worth it

JuggernautParticipantif you want a quick schooling in what groups, bands and/or artists do what in which type of genre, spend an hour on juno.co.uk going through each genre (the best sellers chart is good) and listen to the samples to get a feel of what you like and what you don’t like.
Or go full hog like most dj’s and listen to a hell of a lot of music…all the time. You’ll be broke (or have a huge hard drive of music of which half you’ll probably never play or listen to) by the end of it
