"Replacing 80's (its's actually '80s, by the way) with elecro or mash-up or whatever buzz word folks salivate to now on your "hip-hop, rock, 80's"totin' flyers doesnt make your club any more boutique. WE ALL PLAY THE SAME SONGS BECAUSE YOUR CROWD ONLY DANCES ON WHAT THEY ALREADY KNOW. TRY PUTTING ON "80% TOP 40, 12%SONGS YOU SHOULD LIKE, 8% SONGS YOURE GONNAL LIKE ONCE THEY'RE ON TRL"
i agree with marty coyle on this one (eventhough on some other items on the shitlist i dont) myself as a dj i like all varieties of music and i appreciate the musical composition of some songs but when i play at any public appearance they dont seem to appreciate the music the way i do for instance i played DESTINATION UNKNOWN and they were like i want the original song by Pitbull and is just crazy that some people in some particular clubs (not all clubs or locations) are closed minded and are controlled by MTV and top 10 songs on their radio station i believe that it is true about 80% top 40 12% songs you should like and 8% songs there gonna like once theyre on trl (example madonna give it to me feat pharrel) i played that song a couple of months ago at a club and they were not feeling it but now that the video came out they ask 4 it .
my question is do you feel the sameway about this ? |

I dunno where you're DJing at. but it sounds like an absolute drag.
Where i DJ i get to play what i want...obviously if it's not clicking well with the crowd and the manager makes a note, then it's time to flip it up a little. I'll bend to people's requests if they're pretty or muso's (who know some damn good music i've forgotten about) that's about it.
If you're DJing at a place that's just for the average punter out to spend their cash on drinks and dance to tunes that are on the charts, then you can't complain really...tis your fault for deciding to sell your soul to the pop-devil  |

i totally agree with you but like i said not all places that i go to are the same but like theres some particular places and i noe if youre a club dj that goes around to many gigs youve have encountered places were indeed is the way marty coyle explains i get to play what i want in some clubs but then again theres some that they even tell me to stick to whatever power 106 here in LA is playing but youre are completely correct about being my fault but if you wanna move up sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do and do this gigs to get reputation but a couple of months ago i have giving up some gigs because i dont have fun playing there no more since i do diz because i love it not because of the money so i have collected my soul from the pop devil but once in a while a gig lands where i have to give up my soul yes but i think many people have experienced this |

Totally agree with you in that respect. The thing with the "reputation" ideal is if you play those kinds of gigs you get a reputation for playing that kinda music.
Reputations are as hard as hell to get and yeah you gotta sell your soul every now and then, but sell it in style, eh?
I understand it's a hell of a lot different over the pond and considering it's a big place, picking and choosing if you're a "working" dj isn't really part of the agenda. |
