DJ Mistakes

Postby DJPlayboi on Sun Jun 22, 2008 6:57 pm

What are some of the worst DJ Mistakes you guys have ever made while performing?

When I first started DJing I was using my ipod as a "CD Player" so I would have 3 channels of music to switch from, two cd players, and my ipod. I had Sean Paul playing and was about to put on another banging dance song but instead i accidentally hit play on my ipod without looking at the song and some emo/screamer song came on.........embarrassing.

There are so many I've lost count. There's the classic 'taking the wrong record off the decks', bumping the needle so the record skips nearly to the end, not paying attention so a tune runs out...

Oh, and I can't let this comment go past without a dose of 'wha?'

Hehe, lets hope it was a banging dance remix of Sean Paul!!

Thats always a red face moment, I once was playing what I would consider dance :cheesy:
Something by Vandalism or similar which with no warning stopped mid track.
(A feature which seems to be included in most Denon CD players!!)
With nothing loaded in the other deck the 1st track I got to play on the existing disc
was a Kylie Minogues cover of Santa Baby.
To make matters even worse, trying to make light of the situation on the mic and
wishing everyone a very early happy christmas in May just resulted in a rather
uncomfortable silence

playing a dnb set. Had Dillinja - Grimy playing and had a VIP of Thugged Out Bitch cued up ready to be chopped up n ting.
The pioneer cdj 1000 froze on "Grimy" going Gri, gri, gri, gr, gr,gr, gri, gri, gr,gr,gr etc.
and i didn't actually realise what was going on and was trying my damnest to scratch and cue up with it but it just wasn't working.

Took me about a minute to realise we weren't going anywhere and a few people on the dancefloor had stopped skanking and what not staring at me with a "what the f**k?!!" look on their face.

a quick talk on the mic getting everyone hyped up again and putting some Sub focus on instead sorted it right out.

I was on the turntables for the rest of the night...them Pioneers be shifty!

Ive played on the 1000's 6 nights a week for 8 months and only ever a had a skip on a saved loop twice!
And 2 of the players were nearly 4 years old, used 7 days a week and had never been serviced!
You have to be really unlucky or have a proper messed up disc for a 1000 to fail in my experience.
(mk2 or 3 anyway)

Hahahaha Classic! :D

But one does wonder what your doing with Kylie Mingoue and Vandalism (or similar) on the same disc?! Your CD collection must be a complete nightmare! Though saying that I've got the odd few discs with mismatched stuff on... strange how you just get used to where 'stuff' is!

My favorite is forgetting to press the 'continue' button on CD players when putting on a mix CD so I can nip outside for a quick smoke... "Hmm, it's gone a bit quiet in there...... sh*****t!!!"

for me it's either
a) DJing with some crappy turntables [maybe my own :)] and the stylus is so worn it ignores the grooves and tracks right across the freakin record; or
b) I'm throwing in snippets of a track using the cue function of CDJ- and i decide i'm ready to play the track- throw the fader this side and hit cue again- and we don't get the track, just that -eh-eh-eh-eh-eh-eh
all my good work for nothing

Was playing with a mixer which had a broken crossfader so i was just using the 2 volume sliders to fade the tracks in and out, and forgot that they were both on full volume, and started listening to the track I was about to mix into to beatmatch, and ended up playin both at once! ugly!

Getting drunk and getting hold of a mic would be my fault too! I can't stand djs that yap over a mic yet I shout the odd "here we go" when I get a good drink in me! Totally cheesy and annoying. I must admit i've not done it for a while now though;)

Yeah, add the usual lifting wrong record off etc etc to the list too. I think it's a pretty boring night without one fault! lol

Whilst writing this post it reminded me of a time when a punter came upto me (an older chap who was wasted) and asked "have you got that special d tune?" during which he knocked the needle clean off the record on the right hand side that I was playing! I said back to him " aye, that was it f****n playing!" lol, was so funny at the time!

1st.... I was DJing a sorority party and they was asking for so many request that i was forgetting with order they were told to me and was getting some very mean looks from them.

2nd... This very very very very beautiful and sexy woman walked up to me and asked if i could play "Put it in my Mouth" by Akinyele, so i began to question her about her request and got so caught up in the conversation that i forgot i was actually DJin...lol...It wasn't until the privious song began to fade out that i abruptly cut her off and found any song to play... I took a little console in the fact that me and that lady had some really good fun times until she moved to Detriot, MI.

I could continue, but this is about mistakes and some of the worst moments i had wasn't a mistake on my part...so i'll digress

Hilarious stuff you guys have posted.

Now me...

Yeah, I should be wearing a clown suit to DJ sometimes...

Using Traktor, I toss in whatever track is currently playing on the silent deck, just to check the end of the track (when the melody, bass, or whatever stops, or at what point the tune officially ends). Anyhow, I've forgotten to throw in the next track, had the same tune on both decks, and mixed right back into the track currently playing... Most people won't notice (maybe), but I feel like a little, color changing, silly face ( ) after...

I've also been in the middle of a good mix, and I have no idea why, but, I end up mixing out of the tune that I'm trying to mix into... :x That's really upsetting.

The other day I was djing at a small house party off a very ghetto setup..we basically had a laptop going into one channel to play songs and a cheap numark vinyl table on another channel (just for scratching)

So basically we had to use the effects on the djm 500 to transition between songs.

well during the set when the vibe was good and everybody was dancing i wasnt paying attention to the track time left and the music just stopped...out of panick i just clicked sum random song that sounded just ridiculous i dont even know what it was doing on the laptop haha
everybody just had that "wtf" look and it killed the vibe instantly lmao

::sigh:: i guess it happens to everyone

Haven't dj'ed in years, gonna give it another blast soon though......

Anyway, only ever had one disaster, that was playing 'too heavy' in a local bar. Didn't go down well with the regulars who expected commercial cheese all night

Forgetting to beat match comes to mind frequently. Or just being out of practice is the worst.

Actually the only time I got the "oooh" was dropping a Just Timberlake acapella before I brought the beats in! I was playing some really crunchy electro house and everyone was having a great time then BOOM, it's frat night at the local meat market.

Once I got the beat in the mix I actually got a compliment on the mash-up, but I felt like shite for the entire evening.

Many to choose from:
Taking the needle off the wrong record on my first big gig and having a club full of people turn and shout at me.

Forgetting to exit a loop after I had mixed in the track and noticed about 30 seconds later when the track hadn't really got anywhere.

Forgetting to set the Serato loop "on"

Hitting the wrong Cue button

The 2 pint challenges with OTG.... actually that wasn't a mistake it was fun :)
