Are you running the asio drivers for your soundcard ?

If you've got an onboard soundcard i suggest you download and use asio4all drivers !

I'm having this problem too. I tried upgrading to a SATA drive bc I thought my IDE drive was bottle necking but that didn't really do anything. My computer is a little quicker and I have a ton of space but my tunes still crackle when I have a ton of effects or synths going.

Do you have free space on that hard drive? If you have it filled to the brim then that's going to slow you down.

It sounds like you have a pretty fast computer as it is with the dual core p4. I mean they have quad cores out but I feel like you should have enough processing power. Have you thought about trying to upgrade your ram before you buy a whole new computer? How much can your motherboard handle?

Again, I'm kind of experiencing this problem too but my next step is upgrading my ram. I only have 1 gb so I'm going to up it to 4 gb. Since the dropouts you are hearing are occurring realtime, it's probably due to a RAM issue.

Also, make sure that you have your PC tuned for sound engineering. There are some threads on here about it. Some people suggest dropping all of your video settings to allow more processing for audio. Again, there are a bunch of tips throughout the site.
