DJFusilliParticipantI’ve been using a set of Alesis M1 active mk2s for several years now, and have been reasonably satisfied with them. They were always bass heavy and lacked midrange detail but i got used to compensating with my mix – not ideal but what else could i do. I always thought this was a problem with the monitor speakers themselves though. However i just recently took the time to replace the fairly inexpensive cables i was using with some really quite expensive professional audio cables and i must say the difference is like night and day. Bass response is very balanced and punchy and mid range clarity is amazing. I could tell the difference immediately, as i’d used the monitors with the old cables for the past few years and had gotten used to the sound i could expect from them.
So my hot tip is this: before you upgrade your monitors, you might want to consider upgrading your cables. I bought the most expensive cables i could get my hands on, and even though i spent a good amount of cash, by comparison getting new monitors would have cost much more. And i’m not talking slight improvement here, it was really a huge and very noticeable improvement. My opinion of the Alesis monitors really has changed too, i’d definitely recommend them with good cables. They’re still not the best thing out there, but now i’m getting a much more reliable representation which will make the mixing process faster and easier.

ChunkyEatsMyDinnerParticipantAs fgp303 says, unless the original cables were complete crud or wired wrong, spending boat loads of cash on cables is simply a waste of money.
(Talking particularly of the really expensive ones)Super expensive cables are mainly aimed at the domestic hifi market as professionals are not stupid enough to use them.
An astonishing example is the Nordost Valhalla, 2.0m, 15A IEC power cord.
These go for around $1500 USD second hand!!!!Now whatever justification the company gives as to the amazing properties of these cables, surely you would need the cable to go all the way back to the power station!
You have only changed the last 2 meters of miles of cable!
Its the same with audio cables, these amazing cores made of materials more exotic than a kings crown and dipped in UFO poo are still going to send the audio down those little copper tracks inside the amp.
Of course the screen can help but not sure how a ‘directional’ cable is going to persuade an electron who just a minute ago simply seeked a lower potential to make a change in its itinerary!Phew, got that one of my chest!

DJFusilliParticipantWow, well i didn’t spend $1500 that’s for sure. I’m sure a family member or close friend would intervene before I did something like that! I actually got the idea after i replaced all the patch cables on my guitar pedalboard and also noticed a huge increase in quality using George L’s cables.
My old speaker cables were just some cheap patch leads, so they must have just been really, really bad. I actually feel kinda stupid for not replacing them ages ago!
