Backing up music

Postby Luminance on Tue Dec 11, 2007 7:03 am

Hey Everyone,

I had a question about backing up your tunes and such. I want to backup all my songs but I'm not sure how to do it and also back up the configurations of my sequencers. I have Reason 4, FL Studio 7 and Sonar 6. What do I do about saving all my VSTs and stuff like that so if my computer ever breaks I can get everything back together with the least amount of aggravation. Thanks!

Hey OTG,

Here's my thing on Ghosting. Maybe I was doing it wrong but the disk image I got was enormous. I thought the idea of ghosting was to be able to fit it on to a dvd. The image size I was getting was near 30 gb or so. Any thoughts?

For backing up important files i have an external hard drive.

I get alot of exclusive tunes sent to me, also have alot of other important files that i wouldnt want to lose so i just have them stored on an external hard drive.

Depending where you look you can get them reasonably cheap with a huge amount of GB!!! Well worth it in my opinion, music files take up alot of space really so by storing them on my external hard drive it keeps my pc running smoothly

Caddies for me. Roughly same size hard drive that I need for backup, and it's a case of copy all the vital stuff. Ghost can be used to store the data onto a separate HDD, and that being the hdd in the caddie.

use an external harddrive....and BACK UP your stuff every few weeks.

it's also a good idea to unplug the external harddrive from your computer and the wall when its not in use, so if theres ever a surge from lightning or sumthin, the external hd wont be affected at all.
i actually have 2 external HD's.....1 to keep in the house, and 1 that i back up every month or 2 that i keep in another location (work, gf's house etc), so in case of a fire, i'll have everything backed up. i know this may seem extreme to some, but i would feel like killing myself if i ever lost all of my music....

Many people here are right.
My steps;
Multiple external and dedicated hard drives ( try glyph.com for the ultimate convinience , but any brand name hd will do).
-Simultanious back up.
-Keep them turned off and off the internet ( protection against surges, spikes, blackout brownouts, prolong hard drive life and decreases possibility of the data being stolen off the internet).
-Don't rely only on hd's. Anything critical should be backed up on a dvds or blue ray ( use brand names and possibly archival quality).

If you want to make a complete backup, suitable for restoring the PC to original condition in one step, you need to use a program like Norton Ghost.

This will make an 'image' of the PC hard drive, a complete and compressed copy.

Then if/when your PC goes haywire, you can restore it back exactly how it was by reversing the procedure.

Its very straightforward to use.
