I noticed when my homepage was changed that I had a spyware problem. I did a scan from AdwareAlert, and it told me how many files are infected - almost 400. Now I need to clean those files, but every program I try says its free, but its just talking about the scan, not the clean-up.
I need to know what programs really are free so I can remove all this junk slowing down my computer. Any suggestions? |

You may need to purchase some software to fix the problem. Think about it this way... it's gonna cost $30 to fix the problems, or you (eventually) have an unusable machine. What's worth more to you? $30 or the PC?
The alternative is to reformat your hard drive(s) and reinstall from scratch. |

| have you got spybot search & Destroy as well? people tend to recommend both adware and spybot s&d together in addition to a firewall and anti-virus software. |

| i tend to go for registered antivirus companies like bitdefender internet security 2008. works like a charm |

| a use norton its more hastle then its worth but it does its job a think them ones that give you a free trial are lying about how many virus/ad ware your computer has when the trial runs out so you get scared and buy it |

| programs you pay for do a good job but 9 times out of 10 they will find an IMAGINARY problem just so you think its doing a job.... |

Mainly all info I agree with, when I had PC I used a combination of Lavasoft Adware, Windows firewall and AVG Antivirus, all free.
After installing these 3, I stayed completely virus free for over 2 years (and the machine is still running the same at my parents house now with no problems for a further year)
DONT install Norton, anybody who knows what they are talking about and not trying to sell you it will tell you its not worth the packaging it comes in.
bigcon6409 also makes avery good point, tho the free programs especially 'Ill just scan for free' programs will bombard you with 'errors' and 'threats' which are mainly harmless cookies.
Do a little research on google and make your own decisions on what is actually a threat. |

| I use Spybot S&D,Adaware/Adwatch, and NOD 32 for anti-virus. Sometimes you gotta pay. |
