I think it's very much horses for courses.
Some call them Bootlegs, some Mash Ups. Bastard Pop gets a look in every so often, so why not blends?

Although I always thought of Blends as something that was a combination done live.

And also what's with the shouting (ie using all caps)?

I don't see why putting Jay-Z vocals over a 50 instrumental would be a "blend", but putting the same Jay-Z vocals over a Green Day instrumental would be a "mash-up"?

Besides, does it really matter?

IMO (not like you guys asked) for myself, I'm tired of people (especially DJs in my area) doing acapella remixes and calling them mash-ups. I agree with DJ Cyber Kid... and I think for universal understanding it does matter what you label things.

I myself put up a blend before and thought it was a mash-up. I was then informed that it was a blend and that made me want to learn what a "mash-up" is. Both are dope (mash-ups or blends, etc.) however, before claiming "mash-up" (this part is aimed towards DJs in my area) learn what mash-ups are.

My understanding (and it could be WAY OFF) of a mash-up is taking vocals from one genre, instrumental from another genre and reconstructing it to fit together creating a "new" song. I could be dead wrong though.

Peace.

A blend is when you mix it live .... if it's something that was made on computers, no matter how easy it was to do, it's a mashup.

no. i don't agree with that at all.
i do live mashups as well as "pre"-make them at home.
a blend would probably be more like a hip-hop terminology of a mashup, like a bootleg/bastard pop is the british terminology of the american terminology more commonly known as a "mashup".

i prefer hash-ups or hash-browns personally.

Smilie_PDT you and I seem to have very different opinions.

I think bootlegs tend to be more like remixes, and have no idea what bastard pop means.

but calling the simple live mixing of an acapella over an instrumental a blend is just old school DJ speak .... that's what they called it before the term "mashup" came about.

mash-up and blends are the same thing in my opinion (taking two or more songs to create something new), except mash-up is a term used for commercializing a particular form of remixing. just like breakdancing was used for b-boying/breaking.

I thought a bootleg was something you put your boot on.LOL
Really though, isn't a bootleg an illegal mix.The term bootleging means to smuggle
something in.Back in the '70s when you had a bootleg mix of a song,it meant that it was unreleased and probably smuggled out of the studio or a live mix recorded at the concert illegaly. Rolling Eyes

I thought bootlegs were cheap ways of getting the track e.g recording off the radio then uploading it on a site...then the people would download that bootleg lol

My idea of blends is like what i do, 2 hip hop/rnb tracks mixed together...a mash up is basically 2 different genres 'clashing/mashing' up lol

I guess bootleging means something different to each generation.

I agree with Juggernaut. I started in 1985 back then what people call mashups today we just called them mixes on the west coast and east coast DJ's called them blends. Blends,Mash ups it's the same thing. One can get anal about it if one wants to but you're never gonna convince me nor anybody who started dJing in 80's there's a difference.

Mixing two different songs regards if there from the same genre or different genre is irrevelent becuase most DJ's who did blends/mixes did that way back then and they,WE, didnt make a distinction. so why are people now? Shocked

wow! really?? isn't that hard?? like how can u do as good a job as on the pc, when u can't chop the acapella in places, if u need to?? that's what's sorta of been putting me off to being a DJ. cos i make mash-ups, but it must be so difficult and frustrating when it's live and the acapella starts to jump a bit too out of sync with the instrumental

According to my own terminology, i just think of the terms literally so mashing-up 2 songs or blending 2 songs into each other so;

Bootleg: leaked song

Mash-up: acapella mixed with a different instrumental

people seem to think it's if u mix 2 different genres together. i'd just say that it's more creative, it's just thinking outside of the box. cos really everything follows a plain tempo/pattern.

Blend: mixing two songs into each other's ends (i.e. Ministry of Sound Annuals)

lol and what are the origins of the naming for 'bastard pop'?
