I don't think anyone is arguing. Smilie_PDT I think we're just having a bit of fun. ;)

I have a kinda different perspective to this whole blend/ mash up thingy. Ever watched MTV-Mash whereby they're mashing up grooves? I think a mash-up is more like they do i.e. You've got a jayz track, e.g. dirt off your shoulder, running on deck 1 while maybe a 50 cent joint on the other. The catch? Both songs run simultaneously i.e. not acapella not instrumental but, real tracks and they go along quite well by using loops and samples to get the mix right. Thats my idea of a true mash up. A blend on the other hand would be a jayz acapella mixed with a 50 cent instrumental. Makes sence?

Mashup - using a acapella and an instrumental to make a new song.

Blend - using elements from two or more different songs to create a new song.

Remix - changing an original song by adding effects and/or new compositions.

Bootleg - an illegal copy of a song.

Bastard pop - music that ain't got a daddy.

Okay, this is all tongue-in-cheek, but it's my essential understanding of what the terms mean.

However, if you want to call a remix a mashup or a bootleg a remix or an orange an apple, more power to you ... it's all subjective anyway since there's no official authority laying down the "proper" definitions.

Couldnt SAID it any better

excuse me for being simple minded....mash up or blends? i think they are basically the same thing. in the end they all come down to one action. Mixing!!!

I agree with this guy, at the end of tha day all of these terms really mean the same thing it doesnt really matter what you call it its just a form of music production, no matter how professional it is or isnt..

Well, I know nothing about the history of the terms, but this how I've understood them (which I admit are just my own definitions!)

Bootleg mix (and the inclusion of the word 'mix' is important): Any kind of remix that has NOT been commisioned/made/approved by the artist/record company, most likely made using only the final mixes of the song - chopped up, processed and possibly overdubbed with the 'bootlegger's' own work - but not neccessarily the instrumental of some other song.

Technically speaking, their production and availability is illegal (hence the word 'bootleg'!), although they do sometimes get taken up by the record company and made available - hence the oxymoron 'Official Bootleg'.

Mash-up: A type of 'Bootleg-Mix' which, in its simplest form, overdubs the vocals from one song over the instrumental of another, but often likely to include various cutting/remixing and sampling techniques to make the track into something more than just the sum of the two parts. May include parts from further additional songs.

I'd also include a mix that uses the vocal over the instrumental of a different song by the same artist.

Megamix: A medley of songs, either by the same artist or various artists, put together at a mixing stage by blending parts of one song into another over time (although straight cuts are often used too!). All the techniques above may also be employed, and parts of a Megamix may even be mash-ups!

A 'Blend' is a new one on me...

I agree with you , and i think that's the root of the problem. We need to establish an authority to decide on street terminology. Somebody needs to write a book and decide once and for all, so that others don't abuse the vocabulary.[/quote]
