Southern Hip HopLike southern Hip Hop?
I dig it of course because I'm from the South and you have to reprazent....but I was just sittin here flipping through MTV & BET and couldnt help but notice that the beats all sound pretty much the same (the Lil' Jon type beats). Its alright for a producer to make beats for a couple of different artists....but when you have Lil' Scrappy, T.I., Petey Pablo, Lil Wayne, I-20, etc....etc.....all sounding the same it gets a little wack. yep...lil jon should xpand on creativity and get some new samples. his stuff is kinda like the So So Def wave that hit the late 90's but obviously more influential. I think lil jons style comes from a combination of jermaine dupri, three 6 mafia, and miami bass.
you do have to give it up for southern based artists like Outkast and Cee Lo that have been original since day 1. Outkast may be commercial now but they've been around since the early 90's and have found how to make their music enjoyable to a wide variety of people. Cee Lo is pure originality - comin from the group Goodie Mob, he's now gone solo and has xpanded his style to fit different genres of music kinda like Outkast has. These are my role models right here! - take what you like from different types of music, blend 'em together in your own style and help the music evolve. Personally, outside of cats like Outkast (before Stankonia and The WeakerBoxxx / Crap Below), Goodie Mob, and Field M.O.B., I don't really care for ATL. Hip Hop. ATliens, Aquemini, and Soul Food are classics!
To me, cats like T.I., Ludacris, and Lil' Jon are making ATL. hip hop rather boring, and quite annoying with those club bangers. Those tunes have made me stay out of the clubs lately. When it comes to the N-O, I'm feeling the "old" Cash Money when B.G. was riding with them. B.G. is the N-O, to me. Ain't nobody from Cash Money f'ing with him. He'd squash Lil' Wayne (who, by the way, has no skills EVEN with his new Jay-Z flow). I'm still feeling Mannie Fresh--he's one tight producer and hilarious emcee. I like Birdman's persona and self-esteem. I'm glad Juve's riding with them, even though his last album was kinda wack. No Limit Records is dead--I realized this after hearing Silk's new single (waste of valuable and expensive studio time). Other southern emcees I'm feeling are: Dirty (aka The Dirty Boys) - these boys are OFF THE HOOK! UGK (Bun B and Pimp C) are tight, too. Project Pat has one of the most unique and intriguing flows of all time. Eightball and MJG are classic, but should have never signed with Bad Boy.
