The night I’m resident DJ/Promoter at, Ramshackle, booked him to play when he was over in the country a couple of months ago.
He was a really nice chap, as was Daniel Merriweather, who was with him and did a live version of "Stop Me.." on the night

I’m not a fan nor an hater, though I am bloody jealous of him because I have always had to work for a living.

I am a fan but then again I can see that his music isn’t going to be everyones cup of tea.
One thing to consider is that if his production was shit then he wouldn’t be where he is today. He has become popular due to his skill with a mixing desk and song/music writing ability. And nothing to do with where he came from etc.
I do not believe that you have to be "DJing" for X many years before you can be popular. BUT you are only ever as good as your last gig.If you write/perform stuff that people like then you are bound to become recognised (either locally or globally) for it. In the same way if you produce rubbish or can’t DJ for peanuts then you will get a bad rep equally.
Each to there own and good luck to those that get the breaks (no pun intended)
