on and off for a while (my first mixer was a realistic from radio shack when numark ruled supreme, we used write the bpms on the sleeves and wash of the labels, used alpha beta plastic bags for slipmats) that is a thing of the past now (thank you serato).

the one thing is to practice and practice . dont get frustrated, i know it sounds simpey but stick to it.

second know your music (whatever it happens to be). i think it is more important than even the technical skills. nobody on the dancefloor cares that you can do the crab or transform (even though they do have a place). they just want dance and be taken on a journey.

third know your song structure. you gotta learn where the downbeat is and to count your measures. there are different ways to bring a new song in and each require you to know how the songs are structured.

good luck brotha........

14 years.
Practice.
Practice.
Practice.

And do it because you want to do it, not because
you think it would be "cool" to be a DJ.

12 years.

collect records passionately. discover stuff no one else you know has got. don't play records you don't like (unless it's your brothers wedding).

technically if ur learning on decks then you should learn how to work the pitch control- saves all that pushing and pulling which is ineveitable at first.

adhere strictly to your musical integrity.

pat yourself on the back, djing to a receptive crowd really is the best fun you can have with your clothes on.

get some shelves for the vinyl.

I'd personally say start on vinyl and move on to whatever else. But it's a dated statement, start on what you can afford get your basic beatmatching down to a subconscious skill then move on from there.
It's a personal adventure..no one can TELL you how to DJ. you've got the basics of key and time. other than that it's all feel and personal perception.

I've been playing about 15 years now.

As for tips - not too sure where to start.

It is so much more than just being technically proficient. Networking, marketing, blah blah blah.

Bottom line: GO OUT.
A promoter will not book a DJ that is not active in "the scene"

at least thats my take on it

Wow, I see there are a lot of experienced artists here! I've been dj'ing for only about 2 and half years and I'm getting better and better.

The most important things to being a good music artist is practicing. Keep practicing and releasing your music and let people review your work so you know how to improve.
