I use to use a PC with Cubase, and have since switched to a mac with logic pro.

One feature I really liked about Cubase was that you could quickly do fade ins and outs on individual pieces of audio by dragging the top left or right corners in. The volume of each could also be changed in this manner.

I also am curious as to wether or not there is an option to automatically have logic make copies of effected audio, so I don't forget to make a copy and accidently ruin an 'original' sample.

I hope this is not a stupid question! I have actually been using Logic for a while now (though my new job is kind of spirit crushing, and a drain on my energies), but have not yet learned this thing. I don't even know if it's possible.

I usually have a 50/50 mix of audio tracks and midi tracks, and sometimes opt for midi because it can be easier to edit.

if you convert an mp3 sample to aiff then it's cool you have the mp3 as the original. if it's an aiff, i'd make a duplicate before hand coz what will happen is any changes will be saved as a new aiff file...sometimes it affects the original file (or so that's what i've found)

if you want automation control...press V that enables volume and you can select if you want it for only that track or the whole load

Okay, that's pretty much what I thought.

I have all the originals on the CD, but I'm really paranoid about it getting scratched (yeah, make a backup, I know!).

I have been using the automation via the 'v' control button, and that has worked fine. I guess I just found that one feature in Cubase to be really effective, and was hoping for a similar one in Logic. I do generally like how automation is handled in Logic, though.

Thanks for your time!

the function you're lookin for can be found in the parameter-box of the arrangement view (press 'P'), third option on the left side. in the german version 'einblenden', should be 'fade in' in the english? just mark the region and apply a number.

the big advantage is that it's nondestructive while the same function in the Audio Editor is destructive.
before applying any change in there (i.e. change level or time-machine) i'd recommend to use 'save copy', placed at 'audio' in the editor view.
then you'll keep your original file in the 'Audio Files' folder and apply your changes to a copy, also placed in that folder.
but the Audio Editor is the only place in Logic working destructive.

of course, automation via 'V' is also a possibility but it enables the fader for mixing so i just use it on the volume the last step before bouncing.
perhaps with an automated 'Gain' plugin? but i guess the other way is easier..

Thanks, plattitude - that's exactly what I was looking for, a non destructive fade edit.

Love the p shortcut- great for heavy sequencing action.

P.S, is it true about the hat with a brim?

It most definately is. A simple way to alter Bass into your ear is to pull your ears forward and see how the bass sounds. Smilie_PDT

^ Thats a tip given to me by the way.

which version do you use?
it's part of 7 express and if i remember right it already was in 6 express and 5 platinum..?

btw i heard "serious rumors" Smilie_PDT bout Logic8 being released together with Leopard so waitin a few months for updatin could pay out..

anisina already explained the hat thing, it's taken out of Bob Katz' great book "Mastering Audio" which i can just recommend to everyone interested in workin with audio, not just mastering but also recording and producing.

i use 7 express...admittedly it's 7.1 and every time i save a session it crashes (but saves the file) so i have to reload it...and no way am i forking out £50 for 7.2 express...whilst i don't think Leopard is going to break new grounds (much) that does sound interesting...i've heard loads about Logic 8 but can't say anything coz the source is sworn to silence from apple too..

Cursed gag orders Smilie_PDT

I heard that the new logic 8 is going to be pretty sweet, but I've not heard any details. If it's not too much, i might upgrade, but I really want to get the Trilogy synth. None of the vsts I have really match up to that beast!

I think you used to be able to upgrade from express to pro, but I don't think they are doing that anymore...sadness.

How is the Mastering Audio book as far as accesibility? Is it written for the regular Joe, or someone with a good deal of experience already?

yeah, this update-policy reminds me of Waves.. "pay again or sorry, we leave you with an unfunctional product..." if it was hardware they would simply HAVE to fix the problems for free..

i finally sent my original dvd together with a cheque to ireland (this is the worst update method in the history..) and got my update six weeks later...

i got one person between in my logic8-info-chain so i may dream a fantastic dream with 25 GB ram for Logic and a real competitor for Digital Performer 5, ProTools7 and Cubase4 Smilie_PDT

i think emapple will come up with some surprises, it's been enough time to fix the integration/iLife problems..

here's the link for the express->pro upgrade
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=1CEF50AC&nplm=MA332Z%2FA

but i won't buy it in the apple store (!!) and, as i wrote above, i'd wait a few month.. the update from express7 to pro8 will most probably cost the same as the express7->pro7 nowadays..

bout the bob katz' book.. i won't recommend it as first literature for someone without any experience but i think for anybody with already a bit knowledge (the book says: from musicians and producers to long year experienced mastering engineers) it's a very valueable source for all kinda audio questions, as ear training, processing, dithering...

LOL- I can't believe that is the update method! It seems so...archaic. Then again, I guess something has to be done to combat software piracy. Such an unfortunate thing, because now all my usb ports are occupied, and I need to get some kind of tree or splitter.

what's the iLife integration problem about? Though I doubt it affects me if I never heard about it!

I think i'll try out the Katz book, but I may be back for another reccomendation if it proves to be too involved.

archaic.. that's it.. i agree on anti-piracy but don't we have those sticks exactly for that reason?

logic already occupies one usb-port so i guess that's protection enough..
don't get me wrong, i like the concept of usb-sticks as it enables me to use everything on various computers just by pluggin in these little sticks.
and most of them (at least ilok and xs-key) work with very cheap usb-hubs so there's really no problem but i still can't see why they have to see my original dvd in ireland instead of sending the update to my registered adress Rolling Eyes
