| All I want to do is drop a screen saver that downloaded into my screensaver folder in the system directory. It tells me that the folder is read only and that it is not modifiable. How do I change the settings on access to folders? |

first make sure you're looking at the right dir...
/library/Screen Savers/...
if thats where you're looking then right click (ctrl click) and go to get info. All the way at the bottom of the info screen there is a fold out arrow next to Ownership and Permissions. Click the arrow and there is a drop down box that says you can: it should say read and write. if not change it. else you are only literate. |

That drop down box is greyed out and will not allow me to change it. Also I am having the same problem with my external hard drive which I previously used on my PC for storing all of my music. I am trying to drop an album from my Mac into a folder on my external and it is saying that my external hard drive cannot be modified. The folder info says I can only read.
I really want to know how to change this because it is also not allowing me to add album artwork in iTunes. My Mac is not letting me do stuff that my old PC use to just let me do. Please help me Mac people! |

| it sounds like you;re not running as root which is a good thing but I'm not sure why you can't change the settings on the folder. maybe someone else can figure that one out, but your hard drive concern is pretty easy but nonetheless pretty depressing. Your hard drive is formatted so osx can only read it. In order to make changes it sounds like the only thing you can really do is format it in osx so it will read and write in both xp and osx. I would hold off such a big thing until someone else gives their opinion too... |

Ahhhh that makes sense. You are saying OS X can only read my hard drive because of the way it's formatted. Hmmm well I was thinking about investing in a second external hard drive anyways!
I'm guessing there is no way to format my external without losing all of the data on it? |

| Nope but if you get another one you can move your stuff to the second one and format your first and not lose any data. |

Sorry to bump this guys, don't want to shy away from the original topic but can I just confirm that if a drive is formatted in windows as FAT32 that it will work fine on both PC & Mac? |
