I'm using a powerbook with live 6 and it works (mostly), but my computer has taken a really slow turn, and now I can't play anything in Live without it skipping. I'm trying to figure out what my computer is doing that is taking up so much processor...

i love my macs way better than PC. The only gripe i have is certain vsts nowadays are PC only and i used to have a PC/Mac setup for this situation but it was a pretty big hassle.

I own both a Mac and a PC and I like my Mac a lot more, its a lot more user friendly, and I don't have to worry about pop-ups, viruses, worms, etc. like I would on my PC.

Plus, it looks a lot cooler ! Smilie_PDT

i don't think it's about mac vs pc anymore i think it's about whether you want to use logic or not

urrm - That comment may have held more sway had you not said you worked for Apple!!

You are however entirely correct, I pity those who are buying Cubase 4 to run on Vista.....That will not be pretty @ all.

I (and many others) are gonna give 64bit and Vista a year or two to settle in before trusting serious projects to it.

totally agree but to be honest i'd neither go and install os x 10.5 when it's been released..

i trust apple to keep logic more or less stable but i don't wanna think of all this 3rd party (especially freeware) plugins, drivers etc...

saw a studio running two mac G3 with logic and a ten year old protools system (mixplus? not sure..)
stable as hell ('final' driver generation) and quite affordable.
they combined it with some nice outboard gear and that's it.
i'd be to impatient to see new stuff every week and being unable to use it but it saves money and trouble...

I am switching from a "standard" Dell

to a powerbook G4 laptop

my question is

is the powerbook still a good choice, especially because I am tight on money,

I basically only plan to use Ableton Live 6
and Pro Tools LE, as well as some plug ins

I don't think I need a G5 or even a G4 desktop, because I would use my laptop for live arrangments aswell

Powerbooks are still pretty powerful right? (no pun intended : ) )

Do they evem make "Powerbooks" any more? I thought they switched the line to "MacBook Pro" since they now have the intel chips.

I guess it is just semantics....

Either way, I just picked up a copy of Live from my school software store, and it is running great on my MacBook Pro.

Quote:
Machine Name: MacBook Pro 15"
Machine Model: MacBookPro1,1
Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz

If that helps you any, those are the specs. Not top of the line...

you can still buy powerbooks second hand for decent money and they will still do the job and then some.
I've got a 17" G4 powerbook and i can max out the RAM to 2gig if i want to (i did once but, meh...long story). And remember the RAM is an important issue if you want your processor hungry programs to work to the standard you expect them to. Next is the processor itself, mines only got 1.33Ghz which is barely scraping through. i might change that, but mines a 1st gen model, the later models will most definately be in the region of 2.5 to even 3GHz in processing power. more than enough

I could go on and on. but if you don't want to jump on the macbook pro wagon just yet, it's not all that bad here in G4 powerbook land. Just make sure you check the specs of the powerbook in question and make sure they meet your requirements. Both present and near future.

Thank you for your advice

I am on a bit of a budget...that is mostly why I am choosing the powerbook over the later macbook pro stuff..

I don't need anything all to powerful, generally I would use it to trigger sequences live, and as a foundation for my "home studio"

but I am not all a software based guy plug in wise, I'll use a few internal devices, but I more into outboard gear so I wouldn't have ever sequencer and plug in crammed in on there

generally just Ableton, Pro Tools LE, and maybe Logic

I am kind of new at all this, but I have a good idea of what I am looking for, I just figured a Mac should be powerful (considering I am using an older Dell right now..)

I feel G4s were what a lot of people were using only a few years ago,
they should still be able to get the job done

..and they still do!! know some people who still run their whole studio (especially with the older ProTools Mixplus) on G4s.

i'm runnin pretty much the same apps (ProTools, Logic and Live plus div. plugins) on a desktop G5 plus an 12" ibook G4 and really can't complain.

of course i can't use the ibook for mixing a song with 30+ tracks and plugins (just in logic with the 'freeze-function') or creating tracks with more than 4 or 5 soft-synths in it..

but away from that it's great for songwriting or mobile recording (writes more than 20 track simultaniously on the internal 4.200rpm HD!!!).

as you are using your hardware-stuff, a G4 should be definately enough for you (plus there is no G5 laptop..).
