i have an old vinyl i want to make an acapella from. it contains the original mix 5mins 40secs, and an instr-umental tmin 07secs. is it possible to extract the vocals? i was told both tracks must be the same length to work.

AND IM FINDING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND ANY ORIGINAL WITH AN instr-umental OF THE SAME LENGTH.

please help...

The phase-inversion method really doesn't work as well on analog source material like vinyl. Be that as it may, if you really want to attack it with phase inversion, chop it into bits first and do it on a chunk-by-chunk basis. That way you can cut and paste each verse on its own, trying to get the peaks and valleys of the waves to match bit by bit, and not have the problem of the beginning matching up while the end skews off-time.

I challenge anyone to play me a successful diy acapella using the phase inversion method made from a vinyl source!
You can get slight cancellation, but still tons of frequency bleed, it's just not possible to extract a clean acapella from vinyl.
Especially from 12" singles that were pressed from 2" tape reels (70's 80's 90's) Too many tiny speed and pitch fluctuations
Even more modern digital masters pressed to vinyl get messed up in the cutting lathe process.
What you can do is cut and paste and get it as close as possible to canceling out, then apply something like Knockout.
I've heard that sort of works.

The identical nature of two digital files is what's needed for cancellation. You can't do it recording at home. Both the vocal version and the inst have to be from the studio straight off the boards, as in on a compact (digital) single. Even then they aren't identical all the time. Don't mean to discourage anyone, but this method is an utter waste of time.

Well, now im here....
To improve success on this probably impossible task use a high end audiophile belt drive turntable.
The rubber band helps iron out some of the tiny yet constant speed fluctuations from the motor.
Also both original and instrumental would need to have their own side of the record and play at the same speed (33/45)
If both are on the same side of the vinyl the 2nd track closest to the label will have lost a lot of dynamics, mainly in the
high frequencies as the needle is passing over the record slower than it was at the start of the record.

Try looking for the original on CD from ebay :wink:
