@monstalung: How do you like the APC40? I'm considering picking one up but I don't have much time to spend on music anymore so I tend to be a bit cautious when thinking about getting a new toy...

Honestly i think the APC 40 is over doing itt, a launch pad or a 20 would be fine.

I mean the APC 40 isn't bad, although it may seem like overkill to some

Wow, it's been a minute since I've been on here. I appreciate the input although it's a bit too late. I actually got my APC40 in last week and have just gotten around to playing with it a bit. I'm going to be using it to do some VJing in addition to audio production.

As for it being overkill; I really felt that the mappable nobs would be really useful for things I want to do which is why I didn't go with the launchpad (although I considered that for a long time) or the APC20. I suppose I could have looked at the Machine a bit more but the interface of the APC40 just really made a lot of sense to me.

Welp. Too late now. (Well not really but I have no intention of returning this thing.)

i was an early adopter of the NI Maschine. the build quality could be a bit better (some of the knobs have started sticking a bit, and a couple of the pads have lost sensitivity). but bear in mind this was an early unit; the mk2 might be better.

Abelton live 9 is phenomenal for djing and production. The only thing that I tend to have a battle with is that I can't decide whether its better to go with this or logic. They both have similarities, but i feel that the flex in logic is easier to warp with then abelton. Just a personal preference.
good luck!

looking to get an apc40 not only for mixing but i think it will also help streamline the production process in addition to a regular midi keyboard. looks like i can get a used one guitar center for $140ish... can get away with only an apc20 as well i guess... any advice?

@clearybuzz : Go with the APC40. The APC20 is generally designed as an addon unit to the APC40 (you know, for when you just don't have enough knobs and faders).

I'm using Ableton for over 2 years now. It plays nicely most of the time. But at other times it crashes. And sometimes it crashes so badly u lose all your work. It happend to me several times, when I used max 4 live devices. Not even custom homemade ones, but those packed with the suite. I learnt the following rule: NEVER EVER use a set witth m4l device on stage. Use the native effects and instruments and VSTs u trust, but never m4l!!!!
