phase cancellation & knockout
my project should be a very easy one. i'm trying to extract vocals from "sally (that girl)" by gucci crew II. its basically just vocals over a beat, so i took a snippet of the beat from the end to use as my "instrumental" then tried inverting that in soundforge and mixing it over the original in acid. that didn't work so i figured, ok, so maybe my pitch is off or its not perfectly beatmatched.
so then i installed knockout & re-opened acid using the original, uncompressed rip of the song and the original uncompressed, uninverted sample of the beat and passed it thru the knockout plug-in but that didnt work either. if i understand correctly, you don't even have to have a perfect instrumental for knockout, but it didnt work even though i think i had the two matched perfectly.
any ideas on what im doing wrong? hit me up on AIM (xxSCiZxx) if it'd be easier to chat that way.
thanks guys. |

did you pan the song left and the instrumental bit right?
you need to do that and then put knockout on the master..
try changing the levels of each to get more/less reduction
do a centre channel extraction of the song first (in soundforge or audition) as there should be more vocals in the centre |

i panned the full version hard right and the instrumental hard left. instead of opening the plug in on the track with the full version, i opened it from the bottom (insert fx) which i assume applies the plug in to the whole project.
didnt do a centre extraction first tho; how do i go about that in soundforge?
so if i undertand correctly, i do my centre extraction on the full version in soundforge. then i do my invert/flip on the instrumental in soundforge.
bring both tracks in to acid, match them up with full version panned LEFT and instrumenta RIGHT (hard right?), render it out, then bring that master back into acid and run the knockout plugin on it.
sound right? im new to all this, so please forgive me if i seem a bit ignorant. |

no need to do an phase invert tho if you're gonna be using knockout |
