Is it easier to match and start with an acapella and match it with insrumentals, or start withe the instrumental and put an acapella over the top?
I usually beat match* the acapella to the original track it came from in Ableton. So for example if I wanted to beat match the acapella of Where Is The Love by Black Eyed Peas I would first beat match the original track Where Is The Love and then beat match the acapella by playing the two alongside each other. This means that I can tell that I have beat matched the acapella in time as it is easy to hear when the vocals aren't matching up. Then I can think about putting the acapella over a different instrumental track.
I do this as personally I find it easier to beat match a full track than just an acapella. Hope that is of some help!
*I say beat match but I don't know if that is the correct term - I basically mean the equivalent of warping in Ableton Live
