The future you say??

We want you to have the ability to label our acapellas so in preparation we're after a selection of genre's from that relate to our collection.

Please:-

use lower case, no characters, or any wierd s**t.
no mass genre listings from Google - we need specific genres for OUR collection.

cheers.

The best way would be with two-stage genre names, ie:

Hip Hop - Gangsta Rap
Hip Hop - Booty Bass
Hip Hop - Electrofunk

...you get the idea, have a genre, then a style so people can find what they need as fast as possible, because there is alot of variation within any genre.

Just a thought.

... glorious fun. I can see errors already.
LOWER CASE people.
I dunno how varied the acapellas are and i'd imagine there is a lot of cross over material!

Are you looking for a Genre - sub genre setting? (kinda like what Juno.co.uk have?? it's the only thing/place i know that i've seen work from the back end)

This is gonna be absolute chaos..

Best thing to do would be is to have a primary genre ie. hip-hop and a secondary genre ie. commercial, underground, UK, US..

Seems the best option n appear to be a preferred option already.

As long as it doesn't get stupid with people suggesting 'house - needs painting', 'hip-hop - my grandad has just had one', 'rock - poodle 80s spandex'.. and the rest of it

No doubt there'll be people who don't agree, that wot war was made for..

But...... WAR!!!...... Wot is it good for??..... Absolutely Nuthin'!!!!!!

Don't panic, kids...it's an acapellas database to sort out, not the world banking system or something.

I'd suggest just sticking with the genres used in breaking out the forums themselves--Breaks, Pop, Hip Hop (BUT splitting this into Hip Hop and RNB as separate genres), Downtempo, House, Rock, Garage, and Others--maybe also adding 'Non-English' since there are some of those, but maybe no one cares.

Yeah, the database is big, but just dividing it into a few main genres would increase navigability.

Genre tags? Is that what you're asking? Hard to tell given the directions this conversation has taken.

Anyway, here's my response to what I *think* is the question:

hiphop_gangsta
hiphop_dirtysouth
hiphop_westcoast
hiphop_eastcoast
randb_modern
randb_classic
randb_pop
randb_jazz
rock_modern
rock_classic

etc ... if I'm on the right track, I'll come up with some others and y'all can do likewise. If I'm totally off the track, I'll shut up.

I'm with Jef on this, multi-layered classification is what's required.

Ive always thought rap pellas should be seperate from the rest. You've got a ton of rap pellas, and lets say im randomly searching for a pella to do a house remix of. Chances are im going to skip through the rap pellas ( although ive heard house remixes of rap songs ) If i plan on doing a rap remix, most likely i wont want to see George Michael or Madonna pellas.

Maybe have two seperate indexs, one for rap and one for non-rap. Then beyond that add additional tags.

So:

Browse Rap_Acapellas
Browse Non-Rap_Acapellas

or something like that.

I think its also in the eye of the beholder, what one might think of being one sub-genre another might disagree. Also keep in mind fusion. Some songs may have multiple sub genres.

Heres some main categories from what ive seen....

Rap, RnB, Rock, Jazz, Pop, Dance, Latin, Country, International.

Well then it depends on the architecture of the database, will it allow multiple genres to be stored against a given acapella, and at what point are the genres assigned (I'm thinking more of new additions) - will they be selected by the user, will they be decided by a panel, or how?

Just thinking out loud/in writing (what's the correct term for 'thinking out loud' when putting it in a forum post?)

That's more like it.. thanks for that..

If this helps: Imagine an Acapellas4u v2 with the ability to 'tag' our acapellas then the ability to browse by genre should you so wish
.. something similar to the image below (albeit nowhere near as many options):

More than one 'tag' could and SHOULD be used if applicable as there is so much x-over within the collection, that's what we'd hope members would really do. So to reiterate, it's not so much of providing a complete list of genres covering ALL areas cus we would've simply gone to Shoutcast.com if that's what we were after.
Just really think about our collection, nothing else at this stage.. I will mention 'diy', 'djtool' & 'foreign' tags for now but I'll leave you guys to carry on the debate..

Looks like a good plan (even though Gloucester's spelt incorrectly). I see there's a 5 star rating system too, how much extra work would that be to implement?
