So I finally picked up a 1210 to go with my completely digital setup. I was ripping some vinyl, and it had one of those stickers on it. I left it for about 15 mins halfway through the track, and I came back, and the sticker had caused the stylus to hop up onto the paper. Unfortunately, the program I was using (Virtual DJ's bundled ripper) had stopped recording midway through the breakdown, because it was so quiet. So, not thinking, I scrapped that recording. Then, I was ripping that tune again, and it sounded kinda muffled to me.
I played a track (Agnelli & Nelson - El Nino) I had ripped earlier on the "virtual" deck, and then played the real vinyl at the same time on another channel and spammed the crossfader.
I couldn't tell a difference.
That was all about 2 weeks ago. But the more records I play and the more I kill the bass and pump up the top, the more I'm thinking I damaged the needle.
So I played a song that I'd gotten from beatport, and then picked up the vinyl later because I loved the track (Mike Foyle - Shipwrecked [John O'Callaghan remix]), same as I had before, and spammed the crossfader, only this time I recorded it for you (here it is: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=VWCQH22C and don't panic admins, it's 25 sec of a 460 sec track that I already credited- no copyright issues here ).
I can definitely tell a difference, and I wasn't sure if that was because I damaged the needle, or if it's just because I'm using a Shure m44-7?
I know that needle is supposed to be a tracking needle, and they use it a lot with DVSs because sound quality isn't REALLY important, so thats why I picked that one up (derr shoulda gone with ortofons).
So, what do you guys think? Are the M44-7's supposed to sound THAT much worse than CDJs? Or did I just mess it up that bad? 'Cus if it's just that needle, then I'd go with a different cart entirely rather than buy a replacement stylus...
Thanks a ton guys
Edit: I was assuming you could hear the difference in the sample, but I guess I should say that it's on the CDJ from 0-4 sec, 10-15.5 sec, and 22-25 sec. It's on the possibly mudilated needle from 4-10 sec and 15.5-22 sec. |
