I couldn't resist, I was in Nigeria last christmas and I met a dj out there who gave me access to his catalogue.

I noticed this song (Ahomka Womu) by a Ghanaian group called VIP, was in the same key as that hit by Pyles and Akon from last year.

I tracked down an instrumental and the result is a funky, world beat with a contemporary rap vocal which works quite well.

Even though the sung chorus by Akon fits well in meter/pacing, I'm having trouble getting the rap verse to match up.

Any feedback on how to do this would be appreciated.

Tell me what you think, it's the first mash I've been happy enough with to upload here.

Download it here:

Thanks guys

It sounds in time enough for me. Sounding good all around--seamless work.

If you don't think the rapping fits, try tweaking the pitch/BPM a bit. Akon is such a terrible rapper no one will notice.

I really hate Akon. A lot.

But this track sounds fresh.

Thanks a lot Elmattic.

I'm honored by your message

Also, I noticed you put some Antiballas in one of you podcasts ages back. If you're into afrobeat/hiphop.

Check out Nigerian Gangster by DJ Mike Love from Chicago.

Fela Kuti vs Jay Z, it's an album of legendary cuts/blends. Roc Boyz is definitely a fave and much better than my mash.

I hate American Gangster remixes almost as much as I hate Akon, mostly because there's just so damn many of them and come on, it wasn't that good. Let's do Criminal Minded remixes instead!

But that sounds interesting so I'll check it out. Thanks for peeping out the podcast. You're probably down with http://awesometapesfromafrica.blogspot.com/, or you may actually BE http://awesometapesfromafrica.blogspot.com/, but if you're not, you should be. So should anyone else who peeps this. I especially liked the Wem-Tang Clan (not a typo.)

No, I'm not awesometapes, I'll have to check his blog.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll have to check out the Clan too.

I agree with you about the American Gangster diss, I have seen Jamaican, Nigerian and even 80's Gangster Mash mixtapes.

Sadly no Accordion Gangster though...

Bagpipe Gangster was fire, though.

This made me snort my coffee out my nose. Well done, sir.

Mayowa, I'm loving this track, just has a real smooth feel to it, nice to listen to. I think Akon sounds great on the chorus, I see what you mean about the rap verse, the first verse sounds good but starts to lose a little it near the end, I think just because he has a real stinted flow going. I'm not sure how you would fix it, maybe chop the 'pella into a few more pieces and line each up individually? Second verse is fine, sounds good. It's a real cool beat man, what is that a trombone in the middle there? Sounds cool. Let us know if you update it, I personally think it's pretty nice as it is but I bet you're one of those perfectionist types aren't you....
