What do y'all do when you want to incorporate scratching or scratch a song you don't have on vinyl?
I know there's numerous CD scratching doohickeys, but I don't want to invest in the hardware--and also what if you want to scratch your own isht, which is only a digital file.
iScratch I find pretty clunky and incomprehensible...bunch of lines--I want to rock the cut, not play hangman--and I can't get any output.
Anyone tried MouseScratcher?
Any recommendations for scratching sample packs as well?
Advance apology if this has already been covered but I didn't get any results in the search. |

Sometimes what I do is I take VDJ or Traktor, record myself making a crapload of scratch sounds into .wavs, then use those. Does that suffice, or would you rather have something more professional? |

| If youre doing it digitally try a tape stop effect. Effectrix also has some pretty decent scratching sounds built into it. Its an effect sequencer with 14 different effects, great for those Aphex Twin style glitches as well |

Thanks. I think what I want to do--digitally scratch a sound file--is not really possible, unless this Mouse Scratcher thing works. The technology will eventually catch up. Probably there will be a Wii game called DJ Hero or something.
People seem to use hardware hookups or sample packs (homemade or otherwise). That will probably work but it's kinda fiddly to lay the sample just where I want it.
@cosmicjive, PROPS, I will try both of those.
Anyone else got ideas/programs/plug ins I haven't heard of? |

Hi
I dunno if u've used or found this before but try this link:-
http://www.analogx.com/CONTENTS/download/audio/scratch.htm
Its a program called 'Scratch' by AnalogX and it's bloody FREE!!!!!!!!!!
As always, read the instructions, it would've saved me about 2hrs arsing about wondering how I couldn't just have the bloody scratches by themselves, without the loop I used as the source.
The program can be quite buggy but thats down to the settings u might try/use.. avoid those settings in future, if possible, tho I managed to get some really good scratching out of it just slightly adjusting the settings... Just have a lot of desk space for some of the more manic scratching.
TIP:- Try to use loops that have been medium/highly compressed so u get a good biting sound on ur scratches, tho it is all down to personal taste really (;) tho highly compressed loops really SHIFT AIR!!!)
Hope this helps someone out there
Rob

if a dj cant scratch then he is a dj. if he can scratch the dj should be called a dj scratchologist. |

| scratching is fun, but if you practice on a turntable you get to know about the different scratches (transform, chirp, etc)- then you don't produce tracks with scratches that sound wrong to the enthusiast. You only need 1 direct drive turntable, a scratch record (any of the ones by qbert are good) and a mixer... perhaps borrow from a friend? |

I don't do a lot of scrathing since I spin mostly house, but when I do I take the track I want to scratch and burn it to cd and use my cd turntables. And Steve, turntableism, or scrathing will be around forever. Guys like Qbert, Mix Master Mike, and Premier compose entire songs completely from scratching. It still amazes me. |

Oh, snap...I want one of those.
Thanx for all the advice, people.
And btw, scratching will never die/go away. I mean, look at the harpsichord, that's still popular, right? No, wait. |
